Food for Thought
"Wake up sleepy-head," I chuckle, nudging the shoulder of the sleeping 6-year-old resting on the nurse's couch, "Your mom is here." I collect the backpack, sweater and school supplies sent to the office by the first-grader's frustrated teacher and walk the tired little girl to her waiting mom. "What time did she get to bed last night," I ask. Surprised at the 11 p.m. response I invite the parent into my office. Avoiding an unwanted lecture, I ask the mom if I can help? Acknowledging the need for control of her out-of-control life, the mom and I sit down and create the following list we title, "Things I Need to Do to Help My Child Be Successful in School."

Today's ghastly groaner
Kid: Dad, I need help with my homework. If I have seven crystals and I give away two, how many crystals do I have left?

ROETTER: Good for taxpayers
Matt Roetter would be an excellent choice for the Hayden City Council. I know his efforts to affect a good outcome on local issues is always based upon facts. He listens and gives you his undivided attention. When Matt decides an issue needs a conclusion he stays focused with thorough research. In short, he does his homework. Hayden taxpayers would be well served to have Matt represent them.

ADDIS: For state House
I have had the opportunity to know Jim Addis for almost 20 years. In my role as the head of economic development and as I have served with businesses throughout our community, I have been impressed with Jim’s leadership and vision. He is the leader we need to drive our economy forward. He understands the importance of education and how it will help us for generations to come. He will do his homework on issues, and will make responsible decisions. I am excited to see Jim as our new representative.

Do your homework before planting trees
When Lynne and Kemper Smith moved to Golden, Colo., from Florida six years ago, they bought a new house and planted trees - fruit trees out back and a cache of aspen near the front door.

Internet keeps Cd'A Library open 24/7
Everybody knows "what" the Coeur d'Alene Public library is. It's that big brick building down by the park that's full of books. It's a great place to go for a program, to read, or do a little homework.
Read this summer with your child
I love reading the bulletin boards lining the halls of my school each fall. "What I did on my summer vacation," tops each board as teachers creatively display the writings of their new students' summer experiences with pictures of flowers, cutouts of animals and autumn leaves.

LETTER: Right on, Asa
I was so impressed by a letter submitted by Asa Gray. She is a young woman voting in her first presidential election and has clearly done her homework on choosing a candidate. I heard Evan McMullin on the radio being interviewed by Glenn Beck. He was so well informed on every matter Glenn Beck brought up. He’s my choice as well. Asa, don’t let others shame you for voting for Evan. You are not wasting your vote, you are making a statement. I hope he gets enough votes to shake things up.
KUNISHIGE: Integrity at work
Mr. John Green, as a lawyer, Catholic and former candidate for Kootenai County Sheriff, you should not tell untruths and disparaging statements about Tina Kunishige, candidate for Kootenai County Sheriff. It is oblivious that you are trying to make sure Tina Kunishige does not become our new Kootenai County Sheriff. Why? I believe you and the good ole boy system are afraid she will win and upset the apple cart. Tina Kunishige will lead with honesty and integrity. Kootenai County voters, do your homework before voting. Look at Tina Kunishige’s Facebook page “Tina Kunishige for Kootenai County Sheriff.” Thank You.

Cranky teens sleep-deprived
Sometimes we'd get so frustrated with our teens, wondering if anything we'd taught them about good manners, polite speech, and respect had sunk in. Not to mention getting them up for school without the repeated bleating of a bull horn. Somehow as they reached their 20s, things changed as if by magic. Presto! They'd been listening after all.
Press editorial: Mayor's fiscal sense isn't contagious, alas
Coeur d’Alene Mayor Steve Widmyer did his homework and correctly answered the $63,000 question Wednesday during ignite cda’s budget hearing.
