ABORTION: ‘Do the inconvenient/sacrificial thing’

I find it interesting that pro-life (against abortion), and pro-choice (for abortion) had scheduled a march on Saturday, Jan. 20. I read that about 400 pro-life marchers followed through with their commitment and marched, however the pro-choice march was postponed due to the inconvenience of inclement weather. This event is very telling as to the different philosophies of these two camps. One is willing to sacrifice in order to do what they feel is right, while the other takes the easy way out to avoid discomfort.

CDA SCHOOL LEVY: Does not seem right

I don’t know what the “Levy Rate” that Dr. Hocker used in his opinion piece in the Coeur d’Alene Press on April 26 is, but look at https://www.sde.idaho.gov/finance/ and you find actual numbers. Here are some of the numbers I found published by the state department of education (sde). Draw your own conclusions.

CDA SCHOOL LEVY: Vote yes

At the end of 2022, the median home value in Kootenai County was just under $550,000. Using this value and subtracting $125,000 homeowner exemption, the median taxable value is $425,000. The current $20 million two-year levy is costing the homeowner $76.17 per $100,000 taxable value. That is about $323.66 a year or about $26.97 per month for a home assessed at that median value. This levy will expire on June 30.

HOUSING: Zoning system is adding to crisis

Kootenai County is in need of a significant increase in housing units to meet the current demand. Less than 20 percent of local households can afford to buy a home, and the majority of home sales come from nonresidents. According to a study by the Idaho Asset Building Network, since 1990, the state has gained 56,000 low to modest income households but only added 7,000 affordable housing units. This study also stated Idaho has a current deficit of 22,000 affordable housing units.

PUBLIC SCHOOLS: Solutions suggested

Could there be any greater warnings than the status of our Kootenai County public schools? ‘Something is wrong with the System? (Sept. 26 in the Coeur d’Alene Press) Presently, a large percentage of our kids ‘graduate’ without needing to know how to ‘read?’ Most of our kids kids don’t need to know math, and they graduate from our local high schools? Now, virtually every student can graduate and nobody is held back? In spite of this, presently, about 20% of our youth are ‘driven’ to create futures and persevere through Advanced Placement classes and enter America’s universities. This can leave about 80% of our youth virtually unprepared for life.
