Cultivating kindness

| April 20, 2024 1:00 AM

COEUR d’ALENE — Third-graders at Sorensen Magnet School of the Arts and Humanities recently spread a little sunshine by sowing over 200 bulbs. The students make up the Kindness 101 Club.

Jed Hinkins joined in to help his daughter, Delilah Hinkins, teacher Abby Fremouw and her classmates with planting.

"It makes our community happier and more beautiful," Delilah Hinkins said about the club project.

The group of 20 students meets weekly during recess to discuss how to spread kindness around their school and their community.

For this latest gardening goal, they found a source of inspiration to pick their project.

"We watched a Steve Hartman ‘Kindness 101’ video about an old man that planted 40,000 bulbs to honor his wife," Marcus Weinberger said.

Fremouw said the kids came up with the plan and worked together to bring it to floral fruition.

Mainly gladiolus, tulips and lily bulbs were planted throughout the gardening session.

By getting in touch with their inner green thumbs, the students are hoping to make the others feel the warmth of being a part of the community.

"We love the feeling of kindness," Charli Gabriel said.

That sentiment was echoed by James Hrehor.

"We love being kind," Hrehor said.
