BOOTHE: Argument lacks merit

Regarding Ron Booth’s Jan. 5 letter citing multiple topics expressed in two letters to the editor. Just a few comments. Letters to the editor are generally considered opinion. Guessing you would prefer that these opinions shouldn’t be published? If so, perhaps the paper shouldn’t publish your opinions either. (I am curious about the paper’s ascribed title to your letter “Fallacy and Opinion: Often the Same Thing” Perhaps a bit of an editorial comment?)

ABORTION: Not ‘her body-her decision’

I don’t often respond to letters to the editor, but today I must make an exception. For some reason, much of civilization continues to talk about a woman’s right to terminate a pregnancy based on “her body-her decision.” This fallacy raised its ugly head in Wednesday’s letters to the editor in The Press. Mr. Joe Lykins stated, and I quote “arguments against abortion are based on religion, preventing women from exercising autonomy over their bodies” and uses that to suggest it is “no less than a violation of their right to freedom of religion as stated in the First Amendment.”

MY TURN: Standing by Pastor Paul

I’d like to take the opportunity to respond to the Jan. 17 editorial, “Who knew reconciliation is evil?” The editors took aim at my friend and fellow pastor Paul Van Noy of Candlelight Christian Fellowship. While the editors write with disdain for Pastor Paul, it should be noted that he has labored faithfully within our community for more than 25 years as a pastor and community leader. For about 20 years he has led the Kootenai County Ministerial Association which, despite the claims of the editorial, consists of a broad range of Christian churches within our community with varying convictions — Evangelical, Lutheran, Presbyterian, Nazarene, Independent, Assembly of God, Baptist, Non-denominational, Friends, Church of Christ, Reformed, Anglican — hardly a list that “precisely mirrors” Pastor Paul’s own views.

MAGA REPUBLICANS: Are traditional Republicans

To answer the editors’ questions at the end of the article, “What kind of Republicans in what proportions are moving here? Are they mostly MAGA Republicans or more traditional Republicans?” Guess what. MAGA Republicans are traditional Republicans. Have you forgotten what MAGA stands for? Make America Great Again.

LETTERS, EDITORIAL: ‘Petulant commentary’

The smug, arrogant elitisms spewing out of the ‘Letters to the Editor’ and ‘Editorial’ sections of the Coeur d’Alene Press on Dec. 9, are among some of the most abhorrent and petulant commentary I have ever seen.

In a Letter to the Editor in Sunday’s Coeur d’Alene Press, the writer suggests the Second Amendment should be amended but offers no suggestions on what the amendment should be.

LIBRARY BOOKS: Newspapers should report removals

There was a letter to the editor that suggested that the Coeur d’Alene Press report on what books are removed from the book shelves in the Community Libraries. I wholeheartedly agree that it should be the responsibility of a newspaper to report on books being removed from the library shelves.

ANTI-ESTABLISHMENT: Describes hippies and ‘Trumplicans’

The Dave Pulis letter to the editor “Hippies: To Blame For Most Problems” was very entertaining if not ironic.

EAST SHERMAN MOTELS: Don’t make assumptions about occupants

A recent letter to the editor regarding the “fleabag crack-house” motels on East Sherman isn’t totally wrong about them being a “blight” in our community — but it’s wrong to paint all their occupants in the same brush. Many people are being forced to live in these motels because they can’t find affordable housing. Many of them are seniors, single parents and disabled citizens unable to afford the high rents in this area. Should they freeze on the streets? Sleep in their car? The shelters are full and the waiting lists for low-income housing is year’s long. Many of them used to live in houses that were turned into vacation rentals.

HOUSING: Residential building rate needs to increase

In my last letter to the editor, I pointed out that Kootenai County needed 3,000 housing units per year to maintain current availability in the housing market. Currently, we are suffering from a shortage of homes and can feel it as demand drives up the pricing of homes and rentals.

GINORIO: Position doesn’t recognize history

Ralph K. Ginorio is an educator in Coeur d’Alene and a former columnist for this paper. In a recent Letter to the Editor, Ginorio condemned government efforts to control the spread of COVID-19 as a “regime of restricted freedom” based on “propaganda and censorship.”

LABELS: Assign with caution

In a recent letter to the editor, Community Library Network chair Rachelle Ottosen accused local community members of using Nazi tactics in promoting a “big lie.” (The irony here is deep and I will return to that.) The “big lie” is that Sheriff Norris stole library books. Let’s examine the source of that alleged lie.

CAR d’LANE: Event was disorganized

I normally do not write letters to the editor but I would like to comment on the Car d’Lane car show this past weekend. I was a participant in the show and have been in the past. This past show was so disorganized. A group of us arrived at 5:30 in the morning to line up for the event. We waited until they began parking cars. Cars were directed down Sherman as in the past, first come first served on a parking spot. Our group was directed down to Front Street instead and parked. Others that arrived much later were parked on Sherman as we should have been. Late comers should have been placed on Front Street. The visitor traffic on that street has very little traffic compared to Sherman.

TOURISM: North Idaho families tired of negative impacts

The Coeur d’Alene Press gives a one-sided view of tourism in North Idaho, as if were all unicorns and rainbows, with no downsides. Well here’s a little secret for the editors: Most working families in North Idaho are sick of tourism, and struggle with its negative impacts on a daily basis.
