HORSE: Bucking a negative letter
My daughter has been part of Sparkles and Spurs 4-H group for nine years and I can say with no hesitation the leaders are amazing. Their knowledge of horses and horsemanship is shared freely and with love to 25 young people and their parents every year. I am amazed at their ability to take all of those girls with varying levels of riding and all of those horses with varying levels of training and not only keep them safe but also teach them ground work, proper care, equitation and training. With safety in mind first and foremost, discipline of horses is often necessary because if those 1,000 pound animals start using the flight/fight side of their brain, someone is going to get hurt.
ELK: Photo brutal, negative
I am following up from a very short letter to the editor I read on Sept. 25 from Eileen Davidson.
GIFT: It will keep giving
Last Friday, five princesses went to their very first homecoming dance, dressed to the nines and ready for a great pre-event dinner at Bonsai Bistro. We want to give a special thank you to the couple who picked up the tab for all five of the girls! As parents, we have tried diligently to teach random acts of kindness and generosity. What you reinforced the other night was not only that kindness exists, but that it matters and how great it feels!
HORSE: Cruel Behavior?
In response to “HORSES: Witness to cruel behavior” I recognize the concerns of Ms. Muth. I was a young rider who witnessed an outbreak of a 3-year-old horse in front of Ms. Muth. As a rider and a trainer of these 1,100-pound animals, I know that there are two sides of the horse’s brain, being an animal of prey, a fight or flight (primitive) side and a thinking side. At the time, the horse was using the primitive side instead of his thinking side. I feel that my leader felt a potential issue that could injure the horse itself, other horses, and people around the horse at the time and wanted to ensure everyone’s safety as she always does, and acted out of urgency.

HORSE: From the lady's mouth
To the lady who said she witnessed horse cruelty, and trashed a 4-H group. You made a judgment call on a 30-second snipit of time and a spoken phrase that you didn’t understand. I am the adult in question and the child who was told to discipline her misbehaving horse is my almost 18-year-old daughter. The horse was not spooked, he had been being disrespectful of his rider and other horses around him for some time before the discipline that you saw took place. Including kicking my horse and hitting my leg as I rode close to comfort and relax him. Then his bad behavior escalated and he went to bucking and rearing, moving into other horses/kids and innocent bystanders such as yourself, which he could have hurt badly.

PIKE: Tribe takes wrong step
About five years ago, the Washington Department of Fish and Game destroyed the greatest fishery in the Inland Empire. It was a pike fishery on the Pend Oreille River that could yield 150 pounds of fish for us on a good day. Next, the department targeted smallmouth bass and walleye on the Columbia River. Now, the Coeur d’Alene Tribe has a bounty on pike out of fears that they are damaging the trout fishery when it is evident that drought, warming water and habitat loss are the greatest dangers to cutthroat trout. The bounty will decimate the pike fishery in a matter of months with little or no impact on trout. Which non-salmonid fishery will be targeted next? Rumors are that it could be smallmouth on the Pend Oreille.

Have fun and break violent chains
When summer vacation ends, autumn brings in wave after wave of fundraisers for our region’s many nonprofits. There are so many that most of us can’t keep track, let alone afford the time or money to contribute to them all. With so many worthwhile options, it can be a challenge to decide where your limited charitable funds should go. We’d like to offer two suggestions that promise a great time for donors and support for two tremendous organizations geared primarily to helping women and children in distress, usually as a result of domestic violence.

If you’re one of those people who loves to wander through the draft horse barn at the North Idaho Fair, there’s an event coming up that you may want to attend. It’s a great place to spend a day in a lovely autumn setting, check out the animals in the barns and enjoy some family time!
ELECTION: Time for write-in votes
I understand her reasons, but I was disappointed to see in Thursday’s Press that Barbara Hedden has taken herself out of the City Council race for seat 3. In a city the size of ours, I think it is a shame that anyone for any office should run unopposed.

ABUSE: By all means, do something
In response to Jane Robertson’s letter (ABUSE: Please, don’t look the other way. Sept. 13). My mother taught me to speak up when I see something wrong. Don’t wait for someone else to do it. Don’t ignore it. Ms. Robertson obviously has similar principles but she needs to go a step further. She describes an animal abuser as beating, choking (with a collar), kicking dogs in a public park. She tries to read the license plate on the truck before the abuser drives away but she can’t. Too bad she didn’t enlist the aid of someone else who was witnessing the abuse who may have been able to help her write down the license plate number. Also, calling the authorities, preferably in view of the abuser and/or other witnesses, may have helped stop the situation. Just appearing to look as though a call is being made might help too. If this man abuses his dogs in public, think what he does in private. He must be stopped.
Thrive, don't just survive: Finding the reason you are sick, tired or in pain
Most acute and chronic diseases are created by exposure to toxins, microbes, allergens, poor diet, stress and mechanical injury. Any perturbation to the body by any of those six items will cause a change in how the body functions: an adaptation for the good or bad. Overtime with consistent attack from one or any combination of those items the body falls ill. Functional medicine involves the use of all the tools available: laboratory testing, acupuncture, chiropractic, nutrition, supplements, herbals, vitamins/minerals, genetic testing and most importantly listening to the you, the patient.

TRIBE: Gratitude, not criticism
I can’t resist reacting to Larry Spencer’s attack on the Coeur d’Alene Tribe (“corruption and disingenuous posturing and self-praise”). Spencer states that “In Idaho, the tribes are required to give 5 percent of their net profit to educational entities, which is one of the weakest compacts in America.” What he fails to mention is that the very origin of this state law stemmed from the leadership of the Coeur d’Alene Tribe insisting — in 1992 when the gaming pact was being hammered out — that 5 percent of gaming revenues go to local education. Gifting revenues was the tribe’s idea and they did not have to do this! Other tribes in Idaho have followed the Coeur d’Alene Tribe’s benevolent example and added similar educational gifting to their gaming compacts.
Help from your hormones
We have an amazing substance in our body, called hormones. Hormones are regulatory substances that cause specific cells or tissues to do a prescribed function in the body. Most people when they think of hormones, they think of sex hormones (such as estrogen, progesterone or testosterone), brain hormones that effect moods (such as serotonin, norepinephrine/noradrenaline, GABA and dopamine) and hormones that affect blood sugar levels (such as insulin, cortisol, glucagon and others). These are only a few of the many hormones that control how heathy we are and how much energy we have. Often neglected is the quality of function of the glands and brain that produce or regulate these hormones.

COURT: Blame the presidents
If the U.S. Supreme Court chooses to support sodomites, then the presidents who nominated them have a lot to answer for. Recent idiots who have been appointed to the Supreme Court include William O. Douglas, Sandra Day O’Connor, Ginsburg, Roberts, Sotomayor, etc. What a worthless bunch of losers.
Bears are not the only worry!
Summer time in Coeur d'Alene is filled with fun, family and camping. The great outdoors offer plenty of opportunity for fun, and food is almost always close by.
CLERK: Perfect example of hypocrisy
I have concerns about Kim Davis, Kentucky County Clerk who is thrice divorced passing judgment on gay couples. I find it hypocritical. She states it violates her religious freedom. She is an elected official and should be upholding the law! Many people are quoting from the Old Testament to support their view on gay couples. Do they realize that the Old Testament is the Torah? Everyone in the Old Testament was Jewish.

THANKS: For paying it forward
I would sincerely like to thank an officer who was at a restaurant on Canfield Avenue last Wednesday. The very kind gesture of “paying it forward” was very much appreciated and an act of kindness in our community at this time.

A look at Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl's Article 32 hearing
HOUSTON (AP) — The U.S. Army is set to hold an Article 32 hearing in the case of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, who was charged in March with desertion and misbehavior before the enemy for allegedly leaving his post in southeastern Afghanistan in June 2009. Bergdahl was a prisoner of the Taliban for five years until he was exchanged for five Taliban commanders being held at the U.S. detention center in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Many Republicans and some Democrats criticized the swap as politically motivated and a violation of the U.S. policy of not negotiating with terrorists.

Not all liars are created equal
Most people encounter at least one pathological liar in life. You know the type - lies easily, often, without apparent remorse, using deception to consciously manipulate and control the actions of others. They tend to be charmers, too, thus not easily detected before the damage is done - damage made worse when by a family member or central figure. Dishonesty always creates problems, but not all lies, nor liars, are created equal.

At a meeting recently they indicated they would be stepping up enforcement. This should serve as a warning to sellers agents that stretching the truth could lead to penalties if the Com-mission should catch wind. Offended parties, buyers and their agents should do their part by reporting egregious behavior.

In August, two people presented themselves as generous and good people. I was embarrassed to be in that situation to need help, but it was one of those unexpected circumstances where I did and she made a very stressful day into a grateful one. In addition to her kind act, the pharmacy personnel were also extraordinarily helpful and efficient in helping me get the prescriptions filled.

LIARS: Show gets villain right
This is in response to the article in the Entertainment section about ABC Family’s portrayals of the gay and lesbian community from Sept. 5. While I would be the first to give a yippee to the progress the TV networks have made in giving a voice to the LBGT community, I feel GLAAD I missed the point of the “Pretty Little Liars” season finale.

CDA: Deer aren't the problem
The Coeur d’Alene area recently has been in the news referencing it to be a great place to vacation. Vacation for us over five years ago that determined where we wanted to retire and that was a place that would be such a place as this. We have thrived and so enjoyed our day trip mini-vacations available to us here. That said, we also have been troubled by the point of view that wildlife here are a nuisance to be dealt with.

Don't blame mankind for world's weather events
In 1972, I was taught in my first year of college, in both Astronomy and Geology, that the universe we inhabit was born sometime, four to six billion years ago. In 2010 at the J. Paul Getty Museum in L.A., Calif., I saw, embossed on a most impressive curving wall the quote, "our universe came about between six and eight billion years ago." On a Monday just this past August 2015, I listened to a popular radio personality, talk about the "fact" our universe was "born" 30 to 40 billion years ago... So, in the past 40 some odd years, the timing of the "Big Bang" has leaped backward by 25 to 35 billion years...really...billions?

DEER: Just leave them alone
I applaud Daphne Taylor’s thoughts shared in Saturday’s Press. She’s right — the deer were here first. All of Dalton Gardens was once orchards, mostly pear and apple, at the turn of the century (20th), and they lived and thrived here. Then more people started moving in…I’m sure they knew about the deer. I do not live in D.G. proper, but on the outskirts (in fact, Dalton Avenue runs along my back yard) but I ride and walk in the neighborhood, mostly to SEE the deer. I love them too.

We all have two small glands that sit over the kidneys. They secrete over 50 hormones such as: epinephrine, cortisol, progesterone, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA and DHEAs), estrogen, and testosterone. In females they are the only appreciable source of DHEAs and testosterone, and after menopause, the major sources of estrogen and progesterone. For men, they are the only source of DHEAs, estrogen and progesterone, and after andropause, the major source of testosterone.

CLERK: Hypocrisy over faith and oath
Kim Davis is certainly selective about which of her obligations to her Deity she follows. When she took the oath of office to be County Clerk of Rowan County she swore an oath to the Almighty to uphold the Constitution of the United States. She has a choice: she can break her oath to God, she can set in jail from a personal belief while violating her oath to God, or she can resign her commission and with a free conscience act against same-sex marriage.

The topic of children's health, or the lack of it, is increasingly being scrutinized. The increased incidence of "adult diseases" affecting our children today is chilling. FIRING: For cause key for county
The County Commissioners are wrestling with the “at-will” or “for cause” policy which, at its core, is a debate over the process for firing a county employee. “At will” policy implies that an employee can be terminated “because I said so” while the “for cause” policy requires a reason. This debate is the result of wrongly bringing business thinking to government. Businesses, especially small businesses should be “at-will” because the ultimate responsibility for the business falls to the owner. If an employee is not performing it is the owner that suffers and therefore must have the right to terminate.
Face and neck rejuvenation
Facial aging is an inevitable process and is characterized by volume loss, skin laxity, and surface damage. Volume loss is caused by the natural degradation of fat and bone as we age. Skin laxity is often a product of the natural slowing of collagen production combined with gravity taking its toll and forcing our fat pads to sag. Surface damage can be caused by sun exposure, acne, and free radicals. While medical grade skin care products and cosmetic fillers and injectables can help, most patients reach a point where surgical intervention will provide the best results.

Ten things
Years ago when I was a young grad out of physical therapy school I had the opportunity to care for a young veterinarian who worked in the Air Force and who was an avid runner. She had run pretty much every day of her life and was sent to me when she had an injury while doing calisthenics during training on the base. She was a talented, capable woman and she was determined to get better and run again as quick as possible. Of course, this was exactly the kind of patient I loved to take care of, one who was motivated and sure of their goals. So in my mind I thought no problem. As I began caring for her it became evident fairly early on that this would be no easy task. Her knee had taken years of hard training and in her profession she lifted and carried animals all the time, so her knee had little or no time to ever really recover. As a result she was not progressing according to the scheduled plan and of course, she became discouraged. What I thought would be an easy progression turned difficult.

Do you labor over what's 'success?'
Labor Day's history is rooted in appreciation of hard work, recognition and a day off as reward for contributions of American laborers to the success of society. What defines success to the individual is not simple to measure; beyond advice seminars and self-help gurus, how it looks is different for each of us. Must one be the boss or is success "merely" drawing a salary? Perspective dictates whether one person draws pride in earning the means to feed, clothe, house self and family, or another is dissatisfied at the lack of a higher title or bigger paycheck.

Regarding Juana Perley’s letter Aug. 28, the 14th Amendment states: “All persons born or naturalized in the U.S. and subject to the jurisdiction thereof.” If you are a foreign national, you are not subject to our jurisdiction, and your baby is not a citizen. The 14th Amendment was crafted to turn property into citizens, and should have been sunset when that was accomplished.
LIGHTS: Bet you didn't know this
A friendly head’s up to Anne: I couldn’t agree more that “red light runners” are rampant around here. However, zero part of the problem is yellow traffic lights that are too short. A bigger part of this problem is lack of education. They don’t teach driver’s ed students, and it’s not on any test. The fact that in all 50 states a traffic light is programmed to stay yellow exactly one second for every 10 mph speed limit in that particular location. For example, if the speed limit is 35, the yellow light is on for 3.5 seconds; 50 mph, 5 seconds yellow; and so on.

LIBERALS: We won't worship you
There have been at least three responses to the “fetus is an undifferentiated mass of protoplasm” debate, challenging the contention of the liberal writer that humanity is nothing to be respected. All three of these responses to the original letter deal with a common sense ideal — a concept foreign and abhorrent to liberals. What I always wonder about the liberals, like Mr. Kelly, who feed daily on the liberal-talking points generated on their favorite media sites funded and promoted by Soros (who is working to destroy America to reach the goal of one-world government ruled by superior liberal people) is that why these “progressive” liberals are so arrogant that they cannot accept a viewpoint different than their own! With them there is absolutely no room for any opinion other than their own, and everyone else HAS to accept the gospel according to Soros. I can’t help but think it is a way for them to point out to the conservative world how superior they are to us, and that we should worship them. Good luck on that!

MAIL: Postal service a success
The constant delay of mail is the result of politics. As a result of the ominous 2006 congressional mandate for the U.S. Postal Service to pre-fund future retirees’ health benefits, at $5.6 billion per year until 2016, the USPS had to drastically cut back on service by closing post offices around the country.

Hopefully, Senators Crapo and Risch will be among those supporting diplomacy over war.

Is your thyroid function optimal?
If you have been told, "your thyroid is within normal limits," but you are still feeling tired or depressed, if you've gained some weight that just won't come off, or have a hard time warming up, these could be some of the many symptoms of hypothyroidism. Checking a TSH or free T4 does not give a true picture of what is really going on with your thyroid function. Free T3 is the active part necessary for the cells to function properly. T4 (thyroxine) and T3 (triiodothyronine) are important thyroid hormones. Yet, even with normal levels of T3 and T4, it's possible to still have the symptoms of hypothyroidism, which may be due to excessive production of rT3 in the body. Reverse T3 competes with T3 at important binding sites, which is a problem because rT3 is inactive and therefore not as beneficial as T3.

Laurent always does some of his most creative work for our wine dinners, and the service provided by Patricia's wait staff is seamless, professional and efficient. We look forward to some great food and wine from now until the end of the year.

Veterans survey on VA issues remains open
In the wake of last year's scandals involving the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), I created a veterans survey to learn more about the experiences and needs of Idaho's veterans community. The 2014 Veterans Survey was an invaluable tool. I read the comments that came in and heard loud-and-clear the voices of Idaho veterans. Their voices have shaped my actions on veterans policy and legislation. For example, several veterans told me of their experiences with Agent Orange. Because of their insight, I am a co-sponsor of measures such as S.901, the Toxic Research Exposure Act, and S. 681, the Blue Water Navy Vietnam Veterans Act.

Carbohydrates have gotten a bad rap in the recent years. I've heard, "Carbohydrates make me fat" and "I'm on a low-carb diet" or "I'm cutting out bread." What many people do not realize is how important carbohydrates are for brain and body function. Generally speaking, 130 grams of carbohydrates per day is the minimum amount a person should consume to maintain normal brain and body function (unless directed otherwise by a health care provider for specific medical reasons).

In the recent Dalton Gardens newsletter, it states that "the city will be advertising for trappers to review the possibility of continuing the deer trapping pilot project that was coordinated with Idaho Fish and Game last year." The city is looking for a new trapper because last year's trapper is no longer participating, perhaps due in part to the fact that "the stresses, potential for injury to trapper and animal are not, in my opinion as a professional trapper, ethical and humane." Despite last year's lackluster results, the city has appropriated $10,000 in the city budget to go towards "wildlife management" aka the trapping program. Double the amount from last year, and if the trapping program continues, the costs will continue to rise. This yearly cost increase was predicted by Fish and Game and can be seen in other cities who have enacted hunting or trapping programs to manage deer.
