CORKS: I'll drink to sensible fees

As the original complainant who dared to ask questions about corkage fees in Coeur d’Alene, I would like to thank Mr. George Balling, a well-known world traveler and wine enthusiast, for taking the time to set all of us (restaurant customers and owners) straight on the proper use and charge of corkage fees. For those readers and wine consumers located in the beautiful city of Coeur d’Alene, he says that those restaurants that are selling bottles of wine (after marking it up 30 percent) for their customers to enjoy with their meal, should not be charging those customers a corkage fee of an additional $6-$20 to open that bottle of wine that the customer just purchased in their restaurant.

CORONER: Keene is most qualified

I am voting for Dr. Warren Keene for coroner on May 20. In the Dec. 1, 2012, edition of the Coeur d’Alene Press, the beginnings of the coroner’s office budget overrun were brought to public light. The Kootenai County commissioners were reported to be considering an internal audit of the county coroner’s department, since the coroner had exceeded her department’s budget for the second consecutive year. My understanding is with that included and today’s budget overage, the office is over 50 percent what it was four years ago. Those are my tax dollars being wasted.

RALLY: Conflict and coincidence

Jan. 20 is a day to remember and celebrate the vision and life’s work of Martin Luther King Jr. Advancement of voting rights, nonviolence, organizing against racism, poverty and cruelty with principled methods that changed hearts and minds is just a fraction of what the civil rights movement sacrificed for. Dr. King’s vision transcends beyond any country, demographic or religion. With deep compassion, his words speak to all of humanity.
