ADVERTISING: Advertorial — Our Fall Events Resume

Through the spring and early summer we did not hold most of our events, winemaker dinners and tastings, as the circumstances and restrictions of the coronavirus unfolded.

Say 'I love you' with an Alpaca bear

Valentine's Day reminds us to take a few moments out of our busy lives to reflect and remember someone special. Along with a card and some heartfelt words, we often will bestow a gift to show our love and appreciation.

How we buy and sell wine

All of the tasting we do in our shop with distributors, winemakers and importers is designed with one purpose, to find the best wines at every budget point for our customers. All the swirling and sniffing and note taking and consideration has that simple goal in mind. So how do we do it? What are our priorities and requirements as we do this “work”?

OUR GEM: Climate and the health of Our Gem

When our temperatures dip below zero, it’s hard to imagine how overall warming temperatures might be impacting our lake. Unfortunately, despite some frigid stretches, Coeur d’Alene Lake is already experiencing increases in temperature that can impact many aspects of its ecological health, including water quality and fish habitat.

PICKFORD: For school board

I am writing this letter in regard of Tambra Pickford, running for Zone 3 School Board Trustee. The forum was canceled and I want our community to know that she is 100 percent dedicated to our children and teachers in our community. She volunteers weekly and is always involved with several schools in our community.

SERVICE: A burden or an investment?

We love our lies; we live our lies; then we wonder why we have a mess. Thus, our insanity always earns its just rewards.

SYRIA: We need to stay out

Regarding more military involvement in the Middle East, I find it discouraging and frustrating that our government is wanting to get involved in yet another war, now in Syria. We have been at war in the Middle East for a very long time. We have lost thousands of our finest young people, both men and women. We have spent billions upon billions of dollars and we have nothing to show for it except a huge debt, and a great loss of lives.

Gateway Habitat for Humanity Restore to close for two weeks

POCATELLO — So much has changed over the last few days with the COVID-19 spread. ReStore's staff and board have been discussing what we should do in order to be proactive for those at high risk. The safety of our staff, customers and donors is of utmost importance, and the decision has been made to close the ReStore for a period of two weeks, from March 17 to March 30.

Welcome to the new Coeur d'Alene Regional Chamber

Chambers of commerce exist to help businesses and professionals work together to create a healthy local economy. The byproducts of this symbiotic relationship are often meaningful connections, mutual support, and valuable relationships that transcend the average workday.

Turning the clock back

On March 9, we sprang forward with our clocks and I wrote a column on the effects of the time change on our health and fitness. A few of the issues that I touched on were tied to our circadian rhythms. The impact of these rhythms, once they have been disrupted, where pretty dramatic and involved mood swings, fatigue and can even affect athletes' energy levels and overall performance for a short time.

UNITED: Charity starts at home

I had the privilege of attending the Kootenai County United Way's "Live United" campaign celebration and grant award. What a wonderful way to become more familiar with the truly amazing nonprofits in our community and the extraordinary number of giving and caring people who, through their volunteer efforts and monetary support, provide these community organizations with the resources that allow them to do their very necessary work.

ELECTION: So much at stake

Perhaps mine is a voice from the “wilderness,” but I feel that voice is better than no voice heard at all. Time is running out on the decision to change the political direction of our great nation. Almost three years ago I began to form an opinion on the “change” our current president introduced to the people of this nation. It is briefly outlined below in this letter.

DEBT: It's time to get serious

Politicians have been arguing for five years now about our nation’s debt. We have yet to hear Congress debate the primary cause of our nation’s debt — unfunded war. The war in Iraq has cost our nation $2.2 trillion so far and its legacy cost, the cost of caring for the tens of thousands of wounded veterans, will continue for another 50 years.

CDA SCHOOL LEVY: Vote yes

Though I no longer have children in Coeur d’Alene’s school district, I still care deeply about our district’s continuing ability to deliver top-notch educational programs. Why? Because the quality of our educational system holds equal importance to our enviable quality of life as our rich natural environment and our access to high quality health care. We must protect all three!

Water at heart of region and its people

The Coeur d'Alene region has always been blessed with an abundance of natural beauty and natural resources. The lodge pole pines and tamarack trees that cover our mountainsides serve as our region's skyline and provide habitat to birds and mammals living in the forest and for those of us fortunate to live here, the forest can provide a peaceful getaway, a place to recreate and place of quiet solace. At the center of it all is our gem, Lake Coeur d'Alene.

CODE: Look through local lens

Let me see if I have this right: The Kootenai County commissioners hire a big city, urban-focused firm to prepare a land use code revision for our rural county and are surprised when the firm provides an urban, big city-focused product which does not work for our rural county. After our local citizens raise substantial complaints regarding this “square peg” into “round hole” product, our commissioners decide to pay another $103,000 to the same big city urban focused firm to redo the product, apparently using the same contract language specified the first time. Why do they expect a different result?

SCHOOLS: Demand adequate funding

My husband and I am the parents of two children in the Post Falls School District. We moved our family to Post Falls eight years ago because we care about our kids’ education and we wanted to be sure our son and daughter had the best educational opportunities possible. Eight years later I have to say… As an Idaho taxpayer and voter, I am angry at what Governor Otter, Superintendent Luna and the legislature have done to our public schools recently.

LEVY: Retired — and supportive

We were so disappointed that our community failed to properly support our children when the recent Post Falls School District levy failed.

Opinion: Teachers union suit 'inappropriate'

Kootenai School District students have a long history of excellence in academics and athletics, dating back to the time that Rose Lake and Harrison School Districts first consolidated.  Our test scores have consistently been among the best in the region, our dollars-per-student amount when scholarships are awarded each spring is clearly far above other schools in the area, and the number of Kootenai graduates who have gone on to receive post secondary degrees and certificates is appreciably higher than in other schools.  We are proud of our history, our district, and the unique conditions here that enable this kind of quality.
