Civil rights belong to everyone

Recently I was able to attend a presentation at the Human Rights Education Institute by a staff member of the Southern Poverty Law Center. The presenter gave a brief history of the civil rights movement and also offered a snapshot of the situation for civil rights in America currently, including some specifics about Idaho and Coeur d'Alene. She also entertained a few questions that related to current efforts on behalf of civil rights here and comparisons with some situations in the European Union. I found the presentation to be fascinating. I especially appreciated the efforts and courage of so many who stand up for the rights of others whose voices are not very loud and garner little notice.

What's a man's word worth?

I do not know either County Commissioner Marc Eberlein or County Commissioner David Stewart personally. When they ran for County Commissioner they both presented themselves as champions of "personal property rights" and promised to represent the citizens of Kootenai County fairly. After researching their positions as much as I could, I concluded that there was nothing that either of these men said, or was quoted as saying, that would have prevented me from voting for them. In other words, I took them at their word.

America, stop withdrawing from the world

Since the ending of World War II (1945), America has been, unquestionably, the most powerful nation on Earth. It has served as a model for many countries. Our power, coupled with our democratic and republican foundations, led to many countries emulating our nation’s rule of law philosophy.

Education narrative dangerous to Idaho

A troublesome narrative has emerged in our state that is increasingly critical of postsecondary education. If this narrative takes hold, we risk endangering the future economic prosperity and quality of life in our great state.

FAITHFUL OBSERVATIONS: Why have faith now?

FAITHFUL OBSERVATIONS: Why have faith now?

My wife, Wendy, and I visited Paradise, Calif., last month to meet with and comfort those affected by the horrific Camp Fire that left as many as 86 dead and destroyed more than 18,000 structures last November.

MATH: Slow down, school board

I am writing to ask our school board to take some time on the new math curriculum. We already are not getting the job done! What is the rush to change the program until our newly hired superintendent can weigh in?

CDA: No haven for racists

Mr. Widmyer, I’m writing to urge you to use the power and influence of your office to restore the confidence to the citizens of Coeur d’Alene and beyond that our city is not, once again, a haven to racists and white supremacists. It is a grave error and frankly dishonest to simplistically characterize the current situation in Coeur d’Alene as a legal display of our Second Amendment rights.

PANDEMIC: Praying for writer

With regret I read the letter in the Coeur d’Alene Press by Esequiel Vasquez accusing me and those who attended the National Day of Prayer at McEuen Park of in effect being a danger to our community and indicating that these Protestants are a rabble of non-true worshipers of God who flagrantly resist God ordained authority. He fails to understand that we have a duty under God to provide for our families and those hardest hit by this pandemic.

Chiropractic for weekend warriors

Everyone knows that they need to exercise. The problem in our modern society is that we do not always take the proper time to fit exercise into our daily routine. Being inconsistent with our routines can lead to "weekend warrior" injuries. We lift too much weight in the gym, pack all sports activities into two afternoons, cram all our yard work into a few hours, etc.

LEVY: Pays for positive programs

I had the pleasure of taking my two young sons, ages 5 and 7, to see the Lake City High School (LCHS) theater production of “Nine Dragons” last week. The quality of our high school theater arts programs at both CHS and LCHS are to be commended.

KNIVES: One cause, two great programs

On Sept. 23, U.S. Air Force veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan were presented with 66 Buck commemorative knives for their honorable military war service. Chuck Buck and I presented the knives on behalf of all our donors. In addition to the knives paid for by all our donors, each veteran receives a special, hand-written thank-you card and history packet containing donor lists and publicity of presentations from 2005 forward.

MORMONS: Open door to understanding

I would like to address Laura D.'s letter posted Jan. 19. As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (nicknamed Mormons), I would like to clear up some misunderstanding about our beliefs. In her letter she says we are not Christian; that we do not believe in the Trinity. This could not be further from the truth. The name of our church includes our Savior's name, for starters. Back in the time of Joseph Smith he wrote a letter to a newspaper editor by the name of John Wentworth. This letter contained 13 short statements explaining the basic beliefs of the church I am a member of. These 13 statements later became known as the 13 Articles of Faith. The 1st article of faith states, "We believe in God, the Eternal Father, and in His Son, Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost." The full list of articles can be found at: http://mormon.org/articles-of-faith.
