GUN VIOLENCE: Elected officials should take it seriously

Does anyone else find it disturbing that all our politicians are up in arms about there being no place in politics for violence? How about there is no place in our COUNTRY for violence? They were appropriately appalled at all the mass shootings of little children, worshipers in church, concert goers, and more, BUT failed to do anything substantive to curb them.

Here's where Obama is failing us

In response to a recent letter from Gary Edwards, the concerns of our citizens can be addressed without sarcastic patronizing. Our President and Congress may not be traitorous, but a majority of Americans believe many actions are illegal, immoral, unethical and/or unconstitutional and that the President represents the U.S. as militarily weak, showing a lack of respect for key allies (Great Britain, Israel). Challenging the actions of our elected officials is a right and responsibility.

Our fall 2016 lineup

By the time this column “hits” the paper, and the paper lands on your doorstep, it will be September 4th, and we will be in the Labor Day holiday weekend. While this means we are about to enter the fall season, it also means we are about to start our winemaker dinners and tastings again.

National IPA Day and International Beer Day

Sunday, Aug. 7 will be a day for beer drinkers of all tastes and appreciation levels to celebrate. It is both National IPA Day here in the States and International Beer Day. So for this week, we are going to leave our normal wine commentary and talk a bit about these days to celebrate (and what to enjoy during the celebration). With our expanded beer collection it seems like a well-timed — albeit temporary — segue.

OPINION: Rotary is nonpolitical, nonreligious with no secret objectives

Some local political activists have made repeated attacks against members of our local Rotary clubs. They assert Rotarians are some sort of cabal with secretive and suspicious intentions. These assertions are blatant falsehoods because local Rotarians openly give back in so many ways to our community and our world. Please take a few moments to learn a bit about the history of Rotary and those who are alleged to be these so-called secretive and suspicious folks.

ADVERTISING: Advertorial — Crystals for balance

Shadow and light, high and low, yin and yang, root and crown — balance is everything in life and can have a huge impact on your mental, emotional, and physical wellbeing. Being out of balance can be super jarring and can cause us to trip up and feel unsteady as we move through life. Without balance, we can feel lost or pulled in a thousand different directions and we may struggle with decision making, healthy emotional flow, and in our sense of communication and connection, both with ourselves and the wider world.

MY TURN: Journalistic integrity versus propaganda

Our journey in life can bring us front and center with individuals who seek to injure others, oftentimes, being injured individuals themselves. They burden other people with mean-spiritedness, dishonesty and cruelty, sometimes, because they’ve yet to heal their own psychological injuries. Such people will present mischaracterizations of others, while they present a biased and colored version of reality in general. These individuals lack integrity.

Remembering 'why' you liked a wine

Every year around this time, when we gather with good friends and family we always delve into our personal library to pull out some of our old favorites and share them with those closest to us. This year our Thanksgiving gathering was smaller than normal just me, Mary and another couple who are close friends of ours. We pulled out three older bottles from our library to enjoy over the two nights we celebrated Thanksgiving Day; 1994 Ridge Geyserville, 1994 Ridge Lytton Springs and 1993 Trefethen Reserve Cabernet.
