Wave that flag with pride

Flag Day is celebrated in the United States on June 14 every year. At the seasonal Middlebrook (New Jersey) encampment of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, on June 14 our new flag was hoisted in 1777, which became the tradition of flag day. By resolution passed on that date in 1777, the Second Continental Congress commemorated the adoption of the flag of the United States. President Woodrow Wilson (1856-1924), our 28th President in case you missed it in history class, issued a proclamation in 1916 that officially established June 14 as Flag Day. Though not an official holiday, National Flag Day was established by Act of Congress in 1949.

Wine Camp 2015: Part 1

We just returned from our Wine Camp 2015 trip, and what a grand time we had. This year, 29 friends who also happen to be customers traveled with us to Walla Walla for two days of all things wine. We visited (what were for us) new wineries and also spent time with old friends. For the two nights we stayed with our good friends at the Marcus Whitman downtown. As always, the hotel did a fabulous job of hosting our large group, we highly recommend it as a place to stay when touring Washington wine country.

MAGIC: That's our daily goal

When I think of the valuable work of St. Vincent de Paul North Idaho North Idaho one word comes to mind: MAGIC. I know...stop laughing. Not a word normally associated dealing with the population of low-income or deep poverty. As an organization, “Magic” is not listed on a balance sheet. You cannot measure magic, invest it, or even amortize it over 30 years. Magic is, however, a common word in the halls of St. Vincent de Paul North Idaho.

Thankful or resentful? You choose

First, a short introduction. Pat and I met in 1964 and have been married for 52-plus years. We have lived in the Medimont area for more than 40 years. We have two sons and five grandchildren. We have known for a long time that we live in Heaven on Earth. Recent family events and subsequent unconditional love and support shown by our community has etched in stone the realization we live in a very special place. We are all lucky, us humans who live in the Inland Pacific Northwest.

Mining and the environment: Working together

Mining in the United States begins with extensive environmental analysis, years of government permitting, opportunities for public and stakeholder engagement, and millions of dollars in studies, exploration and planning. These efforts have led to industry best practices that allow for mineral development and environmental protections to coexist.

'...that our flag was still there'

Happy Independence Day everybody. It’s here once again, a chance to celebrate our great nation and independence from Great Britain, who sometimes refer to us as “The Colonies.” I wonder if England has a Fourth of July? They sure remember ours!

OPINION: Bringing facts to the levy discussion

Last month the Coeur d'Alene School District proposed a $25 million perpetual supplemental levy and a $5 million school plant facility levy. Both levy requests narrowly failed. We removed perpetuity from the supplemental levy and we fully removed the plant facility levy request and are presenting the revised single levy on May 16; a $25 million two-year supplemental levy. Without the levy, the district will lose 25% of our budget, forcing cuts of 300+ jobs, eliminating programs including sports, and closing one or two elementary schools.

Does history repeat itself?

Our founders took to heart the warning of Aristotle, how instability is brought about by inequality. They also recognized, as Plato stressed, tyrants will use free speech to seize power over society.

MASKS: Trust the doctor

I read with great interest the story in Friday’s paper regarding the PHD voting for the masking mandate and the protests that were generated by the vote. My husband is one of the many immune compromised people in our community so, although I am politically conservative (and I am sorry this has become politicized when it is actually a health issue), I have real concerns for his safety as well as all our citizens.

OIL SPILL: It's not Obama's fault

Now explain to me why we are all of a sudden blaming our President and it is his problem to clean up this mess of the oil spill and he loses 20 approval points? When in all reality it was done by a huge oil company from a foreign country!! So if Roto Rooter breaks my pipes and it floods all the basements in the area I should call the President of the United states to get it fixed and pay all my neighbors? Our President and our Government did not do this so quit trying to blame them and expect them to fix this. I feel sorry for the poor people that this has affected but the people who are to blame should fix it and compensate the victims.

BUDGET: Doesn't pass smell test

In a recent Press was an article which stated one third of doctors will refuse new Medicare patients due to more proposed cuts. WOW. Couple that with the AMA estimate that nearly 40 percent of doctors will either retire early or quit if Obamacare is instituted and our seniors who have paid into it all their lives are going to have a SERIOUS problem getting the care deserved.
