IRONMAN: Treated like royalty

I just completed my first Ironman last weekend in CDA. While the race itself was certainly challenging and demanding, I was mainly struck by the support and help of both the volunteer staff and the CDA community. Every single volunteer I interacted with, whether at 5:30 a.m. when we were all half asleep, at the various aid stations during the scorching heat of the day, or at 9:30 p.m. when the day was wearing down on us, had the same demeanor. They didn’t just want to help, they were excited to help. They treated me like a royalty. They taught me what it really means to serve.

Patent promises privacy

While in physical therapy Monday morning I overheard a conversation in the next room. They were discussing TSA's new body scanners. The machines have become a popular topic of late: how much is security worth a trade in liberties?

Tips for consumer protection

Like other attorneys general, Lawrence Wasden's primary job is legal advisor to the state. "State" doesn't only mean government. What takes about as much time and staff resources is another function: consumer protection.

ACADEMY: Great learning experience

I recently completed a terrific program called the Citizens’ Academy, which was conducted by the police departments of Post Falls, Coeur d’Alene and Rathdrum, and the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Department. It was about how local law enforcement works and I found it amazing and informative. Here are some of the topics which were covered:

Exercise therapy is effective for reducing pain and disability in knee osteoarthritis

Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a painful condition in which protective cartilage in the knee wears away over time, causing the bones to rub against each other, resulting in pain and difficulty with walking. Exercise therapy prescribed by a physical therapist has been found to be beneficial for reducing pain and disability in patients with knee OA. However, the best type of exercise program has not yet been defined. In particular, it is not known which type of exercises are most effective, how intense the exercises should be, and how long the program should last.

Can bio-identicalh ormone therapy help prevent Alzheimer's?

With the prevalence of Alzheimer's in society, I decided to research the link between bio-identical hormone therapy and Alzheimer's disease. Estradiol effects 400 functions in the body, so how does it affect the brain? Many studies show estrogen (estradiol) can help in the prevention of dementia, heart disease and osteoporosis, especially if administered topically.

CORE: Route to underachievement

Thank you for printing “What parents should know about Common Core,” submitted by Fred Woeller. Clearly, good people have worked hard to do good things for our children and our future. Despite those good intentions, Common Core, as described in the September 8 article, has serious flaws.
