Whether it be the quick start to the season, or an unbeaten weekend, the momentum appears to be on the side of the North Idaho College volleyball team.

Are your thoughts causing you pain?

You might not realize this, but our emotional and physical health are connected. It doesn’t matter what the emotion is, our bodies have a physical response to our thoughts, how we feel and act. Positive emotions, such as gratitude, have been scientifically linked to a number of beneficial health effects; stress and negative emotions can create havoc.

MY TURN: Save the Spokane River

We've lived on the Spokane River for eight years. My disabled son and I got injured when we were both thrown out of our seats in our boat as we came up to an excessive wake made by a wakesurf boat for the very first time. Little did we know at the time, the Spokane River would be taken over by excessive wakes and would ultimately make our River unsafe.

Good leaders use moral compass, not fear

My Turn: Like it or not, we are all teachers

I pen this letter not as some higher than thou individual. Certainly I am not. I do so as a father, a local businessman and citizen of Coeur d'Alene and only after reflecting on the many public issues which have, in recent months, challenged our community as well as the actions/reactions and behaviors of those "responding" to those issues.

Get to know Great Northern University

Chicago-based Moody Bible Institute said in November 2017 it would close its branch campus in Spokane at the end of the academic year. The bombshell not only affected students, faculty and staff, it impacted the entire region. The Pacific Northwest would be losing a school that had a mission of training people for the pastorate, missions and other ministries.

Wine without food

From our winemaker dinners to our tasting notes that go with our wine club we tend to focus on wine and food pairing. How each can make the other and together better. We recently received a question from one of our regular readers though, “What if food is not a big part of our wine enjoyment?” The reader continued, “We enjoy our wine more frequently with good conversation or just for the simple pleasure of drinking a nice glass of wine.”

The Dalton story straight from a Streeter

In support of their effort to recall Dalton Gardens mayor and City Council, recall proponents have disseminated disinformation. Mark Twain is generally attributed with the statement that one should “never let the truth get in the way of a good story.” Such is the case with the bona fides of the recall effort.

FAST FIVE: Martha 'Marty' McCain: Growing up Art on the Green

Meet Martha "Marty" McCain, retired office manager, pre-school teacher, nurse and eternal volunteer at Art on the Green. Her parents, Jack and Liz Steve, were Co-founders of this amazing festival 55 years ago, bringing the arts to the forefront of our beautiful, diverse community. Along with art those many years ago, her mom and a couple of friends felt they needed some food options for the patrons, so they started the "Food Court" 54 years ago, cooking 250 hot dogs on the old tennis courts at McEuen. The next year the festival moved to grounds of our quaint North Idaho College where we are today.

Keeping your pets healthy this spring

Spring is again upon us, and it is time to begin enjoying the great outdoors with our pets. Though spring outings with our pets are some of the best of the year, there are a few things to consider that will help keep us and our pets healthy.

Education: It's not just the dollars

It seems one can't pick up a newspaper these days without reading a headline on funding education - from the proposed $77 billion federal budget for the Department of Education, to the upcoming vote on the $25.8 million levy for Cd'A District 271, to the protests of teachers unions nationwide.

Here's why 4-H matters

To say that I am concerned about the proposed funding cut for the Extension Services in Kootenai County is a grave understatement. I am scared.

Election: We can all vote for KTEC

In 2010 our community passed and built KTEC. This is a place where high school students learn valuable skills leading them into success, high paying jobs. I don't have children nor am I in the manufacturing industry, but I took my role seriously in passing KTEC and I think it's time to look at an expansion of those programs. Here's why.

BUSES: It's the personal touch

There is a lot more to driving a school bus than simply picking children up and dropping them off. These men and women are responsible for the safety of our children. They know many of the parents and grandparents who these children belong to. They know when someone is not to have contact with these children, they know whose parents are responsible and they know the ones who are not. These children share stories with their bus driver because they trust them. For some of these kids the bus driver and their teacher are the only adults in their lives that they can talk openly with. Many of our children, mine included, had the same bus driver from elementary school all the way through high school. Some drivers are even driving the children of their former charges. Continuity is one of the most important services the Coeur d’Alene School District Transportation Department provides.
