Hitching Post nightmare concludes
There are times in life when a door of opportunity opens and you step through to seize the adventure that waits on the other side. We did that nearly 30 years ago, when we first started working at The Hitching Post, and then eventually became the owners.
My turn: New animal abuse law has no teeth
The actions of the Idaho Legislature will soon impact every voter in our state. You may ask: "How is this possible?" You will find the answer through the disappointing tale which follows.
A good friend visits
The best part of our job is all the great people we meet along the way. All of you, our customers, have been so welcoming and we love bringing new wines and new winemakers to you on a regular basis. We also get to meet wine professionals from around the world. Whether they are coming to town for our monthly winemaker events or when they come to the shop to present wines as potential inventory, we get to meet a lot of great people. Winemakers and winery owners, distributors, brokers and importers all have wonderful stories to tell. Many know dear friends and colleagues of ours, all of which adds to the fabric of the story behind each and every bottle we present to you. The majority of the time you get to know these folks at the various tastings and wine dinners we hold with our great restaurant partners at Fleur de Sel.
Fight, flight or rest and digest?
We are all athletes, even if we don’t know it. We are faced with competition, training and recovery needs for our body daily. Our body seeks to live in a state of equilibrium that allows us to work at an optimal level. We must be able to adapt to the physiological, psychological and environmental stressors that we are presented with in order to be healthy athletes.

Looking ahead to a warm spring, summer
Weather Gems
Several Press subscribers asked me in recent days to detail our North Idaho weather prospects for the upcoming spring and summer months beginning on April 1 and ending on Sept. 30, 2014.
WILKEY: She's most qualified
I am voting for Debbie Willkey to be our next Kootenai County Coroner. I am a former emergency first responder and emergency room employee. Debbie has the support of the working men and women in our health care community because we have worked with her for many years. Debbie has also raised and educated her two children in our community and has the concerns of a parent. We trust Debbie
Thanks for the presents
Have yourself a merry little Christmas.
TRUSTEE: Loss to the community
We have known Diane Zipperer for many years. We have always admired her passion and commitment to education. She has worked extremely hard for our school district and her calm, steady demeanor and a willingness to listen has made her an outstanding school board trustee. We are saddened by her resignation and our loss, but extremely grateful for her years of service. THANKS Diane for all you have done for our community! You will be sorely missed.
RETURNED: Stolen reindeer come home
I submitted a letter to the editor recently regarding the theft of our Christmas reindeer on New Year's Eve and asked for their return. Well, imagine our surprise when they were sitting back in our yard Friday morning. Only the people that took them knew where to return them, so we thank you for bringing them home.
LETTER: The hate is within
In response to Dolores Welch’s letter to the editor on Feb. 28, I would like to tell Dolores that your letter is what is truly disgusting. The self-righteous bigotry that you spewed forth showed that the nastiness you attribute to others is really inside yourself. Dolores, “stop trying to shove it down our throats and in our faces.” I hope that when you “face our maker” you are right with her.
DEMOCRATS: We won't switch
Whatever our affiliation, we’re advised in a Press editorial, March 4, to get in line by Friday, March 9, and register as Republican. This is the party, for anyone paying attention, that now has our democracy — or what remains of it — in a stranglehold.
TIMBER: Memo to enviros
The rain has come and we can once again see the mountains from whence comes our smoke. The environmental foolishness has come home to choke us.
Faithful Observations: What our nation needs most
To say that 2020 has been a difficult year is an understatement!
Actually, it's warm in here
The Press headline article October 25, 2011 titled "Left Out in the Cold" by reporter Tom Hasslinger really bothered me. I felt it was a little misleading especially with the first sentence "A financial shortfall will prevent St. Vincent de Paul from opening its Coeur d'Alene warming shelter this winter." I've been blessed, The Press has always been good to me and I've been able to get the stories out when we needed to but I feel this last one missed the mark.
Computers win ... and students lose
I have spent 16 years teaching in the Coeur d'Alene School District and over 20 working with kids. Three years ago I could not have imagined writing this letter. I am aware of the animosity toward teachers by some community members. It is not my intent to make a political statement, though I see much of this animosity taking a political tone. I write this because most of the negative comments I hear originate from people with no classroom affiliation, and because I see and experience the tragic effects of decisions made by those who have little or no teaching experience.
Embracing digital: Experts must never stop learning
Recently we had our annual WSI conference for the Hagadone group here in Coeur d'Alene. We were fortunate enough to have the president of WSI, Doug Schust, come join us from Canada to speak about all the latest developments for our company and digital marketing.
