Your choices

For the next couple of months, wine consumers will be bombarded with this list and that list of the best wines. From big box retailers to wine publications, there will be many interpretations of what constitutes a great wine. As a wine writer who also works daily with customers, I take a different approach, highlighting the wines that you, North Idaho wine consumers, think are the best, based on which ones you come back and buy over and over again. As we say, what matters most is what you like. So here are the wines you have voted for, not in a survey, but with your pocket books and money clips.

Irresponsible lawmakers and an irresponsible law

The Coeur d’Alene Press published two articles about the Idaho State Legislature passing H.B. 194 (Sept. 25 and 26). Without providing associated funding, which could be considerable, the lawmakers decreed that publicly funded libraries in the state (for this article, the Coeur d’Alene Public Library) must establish a system that will block library users from being exposed to “objectionable” content. The library must have this system in place by July 2020.

Our La Nada could be a new La Nina later this year

Weather Gems

The latest sea-surface temperature data indicates that ocean temperatures off the West Coast of South America and along the Equatorial regions are only slightly below normal levels for the past week. Most cooler regions are about a degree Fahrenheit below normal with some isolated pockets of 2 to 3 degrees below average levels. Within the last several days, however, the area of cooler waters has expanded, but it looks like we're still in a La Nada (in-between El Nino and La Nina) event, at least for now.
