Raking... leave your back out of it

It was obvious this weekend that we weren't the only ones that were scrambling to get the leaves raked before the snow flies. And, yes, I have been hearing complaints from fellow "rakers" that the leave raking has been causing havoc on their backs this fall. Raking can be really tough on your lower back if you're not careful. I have a few tips to share with you that may make the work more enjoyable... well, at least, less painful later!

Fight, flight or rest and digest?

HUNTER: About to become hunted

Folks, let me describe to you a situation that has been going on in the Hayden area for the last few years. Specifically in Avondale on Friar Drive and the neighboring streets of Saxon and Tudor. Some low life has been shooting buck deer, leaving the bodies to rot, taking only the heads and horns. This no-class citizen has been using bow and arrow in a residential area. It is our belief that he is scouting the deer during daylight, then returning after dark to kill these animals. One should not refer to this as hunting by any stretch of imagination, as you can practically walk up and pet these creatures.

Ski and shoot, or just dig in to venison

Biathlon competitors don't generally aim for deer when they ski and shoot, but accidents happen, right? These assertively seasoned venison steaks also can be made using bison or beef. Like most game, venison is lean; keep it rare to avoid drying it out. This is part 11 in a series of 11 recipes inspired by the sports to be played at the upcoming winter Olympics in Vancouver.

Find your shoes

First things first, go and find your tennis shoes. Then go get your workout bag and all your workout clothes. You will need a water bottle and don't forget your "never give up spirit," because you will need it when the alarm rings at 5 a.m. or when you need to head to the gym after a terribly long day at work. But whatever you do, don't think for one minute that you can get away with not taking care of this lovely body you have been given. I know maybe it doesn't look as good as it use to, but it still belongs to you and you get to take it with you wherever you go for the rest of your life.

The simplest pairs

Summer is here, or at least it is trying to be here, and when the seasons change we find that our taste in food and wine and the pairings we have with them changes quite a lot. We fire up the grill, dine outside with family and friends, and seek out some of our favorite light bodied varietals that seem somehow to go better with the warm weather.
