EDUCATION: The great teacher inspires

As a retired teacher, I’m thankful The Press includes trends in learning and education. Recent articles, “My Turn” by John Jenson, and a reprint from Idaho Education News caught my attention. Both offered insights on benefits and challenges in learning, however, with differing views. Mr. Jenson focused on “The Flaw in Education,” while the other on interpersonal communication, “A Human Touch.” Mr. Jenson compared teaching history with the learning benefits of playing soccer. The excitement his son received in sports through identity, recognition, group reinforcement and especially, he emphasized repetition which Mr. Jenson believes should be happening in the classroom, but doesn’t. Instead teachers focus on memorizing facts for tests, soon forgotten. Mr. Jenson’s son’s history teacher used “the smoke-and-mirrors switch”(?) instilling answers for the final so he would look good and his students’ grades would too. Yes, it is unfortunate, and sad, if Mr. Jenson’s memory accurately characterized his history teacher’s method. My hope is this employee didn’t make teaching a career. Unfortunately, a few “bad” teachers do survive, very few. Students can make it difficult for those unsuited for the job.

ADVERTISING: Advertorial — Healing without the knife: How chiropractic care and non-surgical spinal decompression work together

In a world where back pain has become a common complaint — from desk jobs to physically demanding labor — many are searching for relief that doesn't involve surgery or long-term medication. Chiropractic care, long known for its holistic, hands-on approach to musculoskeletal health, has increasingly partnered with a powerful, non-invasive treatment: non-surgical spinal decompression therapy.

ADVERTISING: Advertorial — Are you suffering from male menopause?

Male Menopause, more correctly called “Andropause” is on the rise. Also referred to as grumpy old man syndrome, hypogonadism, irritable male syndrome and hypotestosteronism, andropause effects about 30% of healthy men before the age of 50 and 50% of healthy men greater than 60 years old. Beginning around 30 years of age, male testosterone levels drop about 10% per decade. Androgen (hormone) levels fall as well. In many cases, this decline is more rapid, showing as early as age 40.

Associated Press finds 'no definitive evidence' to change credit for famous Vietnam War photo

The AP concluded that it was “possible” Ut took the photo, but it was unable to be proven conclusively due to the passage of time, absence of key evidence, limitations of technology and the deaths of several key people involved. At the same time, AP found no proof that Nguyen took the photo, the report said.

How Utah dentists are preparing patients for the first statewide fluoride ban

Florida is poised to become the second state to ban fluoride under a bill that Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis announced Tuesday he would sign soon. The Ohio and South Carolina legislatures are considering similar measures. Supporters of states’ efforts to ban fluoride said they did not dispute that it could have some benefits but thought people should not be given it by the government without their informed consent.

Homeland Security chief says travelers with no REAL ID can fly for now, but with likely extra steps

The Transportation Security Administration warned people who don’t have the REAL ID to show up early and be prepared for advanced screening to avoid causing delays. “I do not have a belief that this will cause people to miss their flights if they take that additional time in," said Thomas Carter, the TSA's Federal Security Director in New Jersey. "I think there’s that self-responsibility of the law that they need to know, give themselves that extra time, and if they do that, they shouldn’t have an issue.”

Public safety and drug trafficking across Idaho’s borders was foremost on Governor Brad Little’s mind Monday during a press conference at the StanCraft Jet Center. While trying to crack down on cellphones and drug paraphernalia in the prison system, Little noted a common theme in intercepted drug trafficking communications which made him proud of the state's progress: “Stay over the state line.”
