COEUR d’ALENE — Kootenai County commissioners agreed unanimously Tuesday to sign a lease proposed by Lakes Highway District.

“This is an agreement for one year,” Commissioner Leslie Duncan said.

The lease means the county will be able to get the required permit from the Idaho Department of Lands to install a new dock at Bayview.

For years, the county has maintained the properties at Bayview, the Spirit Lake Nautical Loop and the Twin Lakes Par 3 for waterway access and maintenance, but when the lease was terminated this winter, the partnership was thrown into question.

Because Lakes Highway District is unable to actively maintain the properties due to its jurisdiction as a highway district, Kootenai County has covered the properties for the public through its Parks and Waterways Department.

The new lease agreement includes a requirement for 180 days' notice if the lease is vacated in the future.

The lease is only for the 2025-26 season.
