REFORM: Beware many online pitfalls

I am disturbed that the Idaho Legislature recently passed the education reform bill SB1184 which diverts money from teachers' pay in order to buy laptops and require online courses. As a pediatrician I frequently counsel parents and students about the need to limit "screen time" that can consume hours each day as kids log-on to the Internet, play video games or watch TV. Consequently, vital communication and social skills are often not well developed. Of course, our students need to be computer competent but to suggest that online courses replace real time, live instruction and classroom discussion is negligent and doomed to fail.

HILLARY: Guilty of treason

I am a Vietnam-era veteran and remember what Hanoi Jane, aka Jane Fonda, did in Hanoi. She met the definition of a traitor giving aid and comfort to an enemy of the United States of America. I am sure most if not all veterans remember; I sure do and will never forget. I have three sons who did numerous tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, two Army officers and a Navy Seal. What she did and said can never be overlooked and dismissed by any patriot of the USA.

SILENCE: Is golden with military intel

“Loose lips sink ships” a catch phrase of the ‘40s used to avoid public announcements about ship movements because German submarines were actively sinking ships off our coastline carrying “lease lend” material to our allies in Europe. It was more than a catchy phase when it came to a schedule for invading Normandy, Iwo Jima or some unnamed island in the Pacific. Can one imagine the consequences if the Japanese Navy had announced their plans to attack Pearl Harbor in advance! It was Top Secret information of the highest order that was closely held for the purpose of keeping the enemy guessing and unprepared for planned operations. As a pilot involved in Task Force 38 operations, during the ‘40s we traveled far and wide in the Pacific using “Radio Silence” for the same identical reason just to keep the enemy guessing.
