Friday is Arbor Day!

| April 26, 2018 1:00 AM

This Friday, the city of Coeur d’Alene and North Idaho College are hosting activities for Arbor Day 2018 on the NIC campus. There will be a ceremony held at noon with a tree planting to follow. Other activities include door prizes, free seedling giveaways and art contest displays.

NIC will be recognized by the Arbor Day Foundation for being granted the Tree Campus USA award for 2017, which encourages and honors campuses for promoting healthy and sustainable community trees and forests. Tree Campus USA requires five standards are met in order to qualify, which include maintaining a tree advisory committee, a campus tree care plan, dedicated annual expenditures for its campus tree program, an Arbor Day observance and student service learning projects.

The city of Coeur d’Alene will also be recognized by the Arbor Day Foundation with the Tree City USA award. This will be the city’s 34th year for this recognition!

Also being recognized this Arbor Day is Elise Pearse, a fifth-grade homeschool student from Post Falls. She entered and won the fifth- and sixth-grade category for 2018 Arbor Day Photo Contest, sponsored by Idaho Forest Products Commission (IFPC). The contest, open to all Idaho students in fifth through 12th grades, posed the question, “What do you see when you look into the forest?” To view Elise’s photo, along with all the other winning and honorable mentions, visit idahoforests.org/content-item/arbor-day-photo-contest-2018/.

Looking to plant a tree of your own this Arbor Day? Head to Home Depot, Mountain West Bank, Paul Bunyan, Numerica Credit Union or the Kroc Center to receive a free Blue Spruce seedling on Friday. These trees are donated annually by IFPC. They have gifted almost 540,000 seedlings to Idaho communities over the years.
