AMENDMENTS: On ballots prematurely
I live in a home for old people. I recently sent for my absentee ballot and upon its arrival, immediately sat down to read it. There were four amendments to the Idaho constitution. I read them four times and it sounded great for taxpayers, but something was bothering me. My daughter came to visit me later and I had her read them. She covered the material four times, but was also bothered.

PANEL: Barrier to birth control?
I've read that a group of medical and policy experts are deciding whether to categorize birth control as preventive medicine under the new health care reform law. If it is considered preventive medicine, it will be covered for free by health plans and women will not be required to contribute co-pays to get their prescription birth control.
SB 1338: It's unconstitutional
Senate Bill 1338, brought to us by Sen. Sheryl Nuxoll, R.-Cottonwood, purports to allow counties to declare federal land a “Catastrophic Public Nuisance.” The proposed legislation then claims to allow a county or its sheriff to take steps to abate the nuisance. Presumably this means the county can order trees be logged, roads be constructed, or prescriptive fires be lit on federal land.

As summer arrives and the plans start to fall into place for the North Idaho Fair and Rodeo, the judges, coordinators, distributors, and wineries get ready to start on the North Idaho Wine Rodeo commercial wine competition. Like last year we are receiving entries from all over the world spanning most every varietal category and retail price point. With about half of the entries still to be cataloged we have reviewed over 135 entries. Again this year the largest category looks to be red blends with over 27 entered already!

Vicks for hemorrhoids?
DEAR DR. GOTT: Seven or eight years ago, you suggested using Vicks VapoRub for relief of the discomfort associated with anal hemorrhoids. It has worked really well for me. I have used both the Vicks and store-brand equivalents. I have no more pain from my two hemorrhoids but now wonder if I should keep using the product or have the hemorrhoids removed. I am a 67-year-old male.
