We just held a tasting here at the shop with DuMol Winery from the Russian River Valley of Sonoma County. For regular readers of this column, you know our fondness for wines from “The Russian” after our time living in Sonoma County and more specifically my time at Balletto Vineyards. To us it is one of the most magical appellations of any wine region in the world, perfectly suited for the varietals that are planted there. Mary and I always get the question of what our favorite wine is, which of course is unanswerable, but digging a bit deeper on the wines we truly love we would place DuMol in our top 3 favorites from anywhere, to us the wines are that good.

STATE: Meet your obligations
Despite a tax cut for corporations and high-income individuals in 2012, and another tax cut for businesses in 2013, there still seems to be a modest surplus projected for the state treasury this fiscal year. The governor, most of the Legislature and business lobbyists were in town last week to talk about that. Their solutions involve giving big business another big tax cut next year. Before the Legislature devises yet another way to further deplete the treasury, shouldn’t the Legislature first focus on adequately funding its current obligations?

Jerry Jaeger, president and co-owner of the Hagadone Hospitality Company of Coeur d'Alene, sent me a copy of the March 22 Kiplinger Letter detailing our nation's weather woes stemming from the worst cycle of 'extremes' since just prior to the Little Ice Age in the 1300s.

Last week in 'Gems,' we featured the all-time Coeur d'Alene snowfall records for the past 116 years dating back to 1895. Each season ends officially on June 30.
To get an accurate total, snow must be measured at least six times a day

Several Press subscribers have asked me why I seem to measure more snowfall each winter season on Player Drive than they see at their particular location in town.
CHARTER: An Idaho gem
Thanks to the Coeur d’Alene Press and Judd Wilson, there has been a very nefarious scheme to see to it the Charter Academy isn’t recognized as one of the best highs in the U.S. The problem turns out to be our own Idaho Department of Education. Apparently, the entire staff of that department has no idea how to read a calendar to be able to get the information to U.S. News & World Reports timely.
