The cost of obesity

This week, I would like to touch on the sensitive subject of obesity. The costs of obesity to our health are widely known, such as diabetes, heart disease and some forms of cancer. One set of culprits that drives obesity is found in the sugars, sweeteners and processed foods we eat. The other big factor to weight gain and obesity is a sedentary lifestyle. The basic premise to this is our bodies store fat so effectively that when we eat more calories then we burn, we gain weight. I will come back to these points later in the column.

It's Time for a Fresh Approach & New Ideas in the Governor's Office

Idahoans, including myself, appreciate Governor Butch Otter’s 12 years of longstanding service to the State of Idaho. His efforts are truly to be commended. As we look to the future of our great state though – it’s time we say goodbye to the status quo and career politician model – and bring a fresh approach, new ideas and real-world experience to the Governor’s office.

How does Idaho measure up?

Last week’s Coeur d’Alene Press had a well-done two-part series addressing the annual report that compares health, social and environmental factors across counties in every state. Kootenai County had a mixed set of marginal to poor statistics. Reading through the comparatives between our Idaho counties was interesting and made me wonder how the U.S. compares globally. This information also made me wonder: how does Idaho compare with our neighboring states?

The Idaho Travel Council announced Wednesday it granted nearly $2 million to tourism nonprofits in North Idaho to market their cities, towns and regions as travel destinations.

Literacy: Now read this

Literacy, the ability to read and comprehend the written word, has always had a high economic, political, and cultural value. Those who are blessed with high literacy are favored with high social status. They receive the best jobs, and are paid the most. As we are now in the Information Age (some call it the Data Age) literacy has been assigned the highest possible value. Virtually every new job created in the coming years will require a community college or a four-year college education, whose educational requirements are unattainable to the nonreader. Those few remaining jobs available for the nonreader are being replaced with machines and robots at an accelerating rate or simply done away with.

KASTNING: Qualities that matter

Integrity, honesty, Christianity and a desire to reduce the size of government are all important to me. It is crucial to elect honorable representatives who will have virtues that align with mine. Tim Kastning is just that candidate. If Russ Fulcher, our Congressman for District 1, and Janice McGeachin, our Lieutenant Governor, have both endorsed Tim then that is good enough for me.

DAD: Shares gifts generously

To my dad George, a kind-hearted, generous man who donated more than 800 pounds of turkeys and hams to the food bank in our community! I am grateful and very proud to have you as my dad. I love you and thank you, along with our community in these desperate times of need.

PARKING: City's rules are arbitrary

Can you let us, the public, know why we can't park on our public streets in front of our public park and public lake? And how do 10 homes get to enjoy "no parking" in front of their private residences? Can I request "no parking" in front of my house?

RECALL: Wait until next year

In my opinion the public process was followed and the result is a beautiful $14 million upgrade to our city park that will generate more than that in increased tourism and events. I am opposed to dividing our community with this ugly fight.
