What we have done
Many of you are aware that Realtors are among the largest and therefore most powerful lobbies in the nation. Of course our primary goal is to ensure that each of us retains our private property rights. Even here, in the Gem State, your rights are often threatened sometimes unbeknownst to you. Our Idaho Association of Realtors (IAR) employs a full-time lobbyist who is on "the hill" as much as most legislators, making sure the real estate profession's opinions are heard.
OPINION: Idaho Freedom Foundation misinforms about the education initiative
The ill-named Idaho Freedom Foundation, which essentially owns and operates the extremist branch of today’s Republican Party, wants to destroy the Gem State’s public school system. As recent as Aug. 8, IFF President Wayne Hoffman repeated his demand for the state to get out of the “education business.” That seems to be a tall order since the Idaho Constitution requires the Legislature to “maintain a general, uniform and thorough system of public, free common schools.” Hoffman claims our “school system is largely transforming into an indoctrination camp built not to teach students reading, writing, and arithmetic, but rather a center teaching them rioting, resistance, and race war.” It seems like Hoffman desperately needs a crash course on what dedicated teachers across Idaho are doing to educate our kids with the insufficient resources they receive from the Legislature.

Idaho ranks 48th in the nation for labor productivity
Doesn't mean Idahoans don't work hard
Despite ranking among the lowest states in terms of labor productivity, Idaho has a substantial tax surplus. Data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates that Idaho’s labor productivity has ranked among the bottom four states for the past decade and beyond. Most recently, the Gem State was in 48th place.
Un-earthing the gems
Many years ago, before “The Dinner Party” was even an idea in Mary’s and my mind, we held a dinner party at our home. It was a mixed crowd of couples and individual folks there on their own. One of those attending was our sister-in-law, Paula, who is married to Mary’s brother, John, who at the time was working as a sommelier prior to starting his winery, Skylark. Most everyone contributed a bottle or two, and John, who was working at the restaurant that night and unable to attend, sent Paula with a bottle of Private Reserve from Berringer Winery.
Obama goes to Idaho
President cheered by thousands in Boise
BOISE - Idaho's politics may run red, but the city of Boise is one of the Gem State's few Democratic strongholds. It showed Wednesday when thousands of people in a Boise State University building erupted into cheers as President Barack Obama took the stage for his first post-State of the Union speech.

OUR GEM: Ecosystem services that wetlands provide
Wetlands refer to the watery transition zones between surface water and dry land. They can be wet year-round or only during certain parts of the year, such as following spring runoff. Essential parts of a wetland include aquatic plants specifically adapted to live in fully saturated environments. In the Inland Northwest, non-tidal wetlands are prevalent, unlike coastal regions that support tidal wetlands.
DMV alert: Slower times dead ahead
