GOSPEL: Separate fact from fiction
This is certainly free speech at work here - when someone like Kathryn Kriss is viewed as an "expert" in the Bible study series "The Hole in OUR Gospel" and The Press allows her opinion to be heard. Kathryn - have you read the book? Do you know what this is all about? I am two weeks into the study and I am very convicted by what it is saying to me.
FILLIOS: Experience running businesses
Kootenai County has experienced unprecedented growth over the past decade. This growth has produced both new challenges to our infrastructure, employment and business community. The citizens of Kootenai need and deserve representatives who will deal with these challenges effectively and in a manner consistent with our wishes and in our best interests.
CORPS: Feds must regulate
I wonder when we, the people of the United States, will understand the obvious truth: government MUST regulate corporate activity. Can we afford to believe, for even a moment longer, that what's good for business is good for America? How many more lost retirement accounts, jobs shipped overseas, tainted foodstuffs, deadly mine blasts, poisoned environments, and broken oil pipelines gushing into our oceans can we possibly ignore?
ELECTION: Avoid the self-serving
Once again, back to the drawing board on our defense budget. Our Fearless Leader, currently occupying the White House, has decreed that the F-35 project should be scrapped because we “don’t need it.”
LEVY: Helps entire community
Healthy public education is at the core of a healthy community. Well educated and intelligent students who have benefited from our public education system can be found throughout our community as they have either remained here after high school or later returned to live here and pay back a community that supported them through public education.
CHURCH: Disappointed member
A week ago I wrote about the lack of common sense in regard to the LGBT community. Well common sense left our church today.
DEMOCRATS: Working for you
As a registered Republican for almost a decade, I know we have tried Republican legislators as leaders in Kootenai County and our state Legislature. This year it is time for a change.
AMADOR: Because he's needed
Our Coeur d’Alene community is lucky to have the chance to vote for Paul Amador in the upcoming primary election. Paul is a candidate of great character, strong leadership, and thoughtful decision-making. As a valued and active member of this community, I know he is the right candidate.
THANKS: For unexpected gift
Just wanted to send a huge thank you to the party that delivered an anonymous Christmas card to me on December 11th. Your words moved me to tears. It has been a challenging year and a half for myself, and my family. We lost our dad unexpectedly last April. He was a huge part of our lives. While doing our best to stay positive, and to be in the Christmas Spirit for the kids, it’s been a struggle. I’m also a single parent to the most beautiful little boy. The money you put in this card allowed me to give my son a special Christmas this year, and to get ahead. From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank you for putting a smile on my face. I will continue to show kindness and gratitude. Someday I hope to do something of this magnitude for someone else. Merry Christmas from my family to yours!
BERMS: Unbeatable foes
As winter comes I was thinking of previous letters about plowing and berms left at the end of our driveways. Mr. Koch should feel fortunate that he lives where he does. I also live in Coeur d’Alene, in the Fernan School area. We are plowed in with large berms across our driveways. My neighbor and I both have health issues that make shoveling these berms difficult.
TRAFFIC: This area not so bad
In response to Mr. Gerard’s comments on our traffic lights in our area. We do not live in Chicago or California or any other area the last time I checked. I have timed the traffic lights and in most cases they change every 90 seconds. I do realize that at certain times of the day they have back ups that may cause a little discomfort to some, but for the most part, we in this area have a little patience.
SHOOTING: Why we love it here
Many of us are grieving with the staff and families of Sandy Hook Elementary. It happened to my profession and our kids. Each day it becomes a little bit clearer about what took place and so our grief grows a little bit deeper.
CHICKENS: Cuts fully explained
In a wonderful March 2 front-page article on poultry production by Alecia Warren, it was noted that Deirdre’s position at the local Extension Office had been eliminated due to budget cuts. While I appreciate the calls and comments received, I want to assure all concerned citizens that this budget reduction was not due to actions by our county commissioners.
GOOKIN: For county clerk
Transparency in government. We hear this phrase all the time, but what is it and why is it important?
MIRANDA: For commissioner
Is anyone else getting tired of how Kootenai County is being run? There seems to be no pre-planning on growth or construction! The county even opted out of building codes? That is not safe! Exceptions seem to be given readily that impact our beautiful Lake Coeur d’Alene and Spokane River, not to mention our sole drinking water source, our aquifer.
LAKELAND: Teachers who care
I am writing this to give my personal experience of Lakeland that I value very much. The teachers here do not care about their wages or their evaluations, but more of how their students are doing on an educational level and a personal level. They care about how a student’s home environment is and how they are doing in other classes, etc.
William Millsaps
Name: William “Bill” Millsaps
PROTEST: Bullies and miscreants?
As chair of the Kootenai County Democrats, I am compelled to respond to my colleague of the Republican Central Committee. Now you know how we feel whenever we have a publicized event. You have nothing to fear from our contingent of peaceful, responsible, respectful citizens. We too have arranged for extra security at our events. You have more to fear from the same people we have concerns about as we peacefully gather and march: tough guys in suped up pickups who try to run us down in parking lots or so-called “patriots” who shout obscenities and insults.
LEGISLATORS: Ignorance unmasked
My wife and I are new to Coeur d’Alene and Idaho as of this past September.
Vets offered free lunch on Friday
