The human cost of Idaho's Medicaid gap

The time has come to shift the argument about Medicaid beyond the dollars that would be saved with expansion to the ongoing human tragedy occurring in our state.

Feds overstep their bounds in demanding voter data

The federal government sent shock waves around the nation over the Fourth of July weekend when it demanded that states turn over a trove of your personal and voting information to be kept in a centralized database in Washington, D.C. The purpose of the demand is ostensibly to investigate voter fraud.

IDAHO: Time for major change

Of all states, Idaho ranks 49th in per capita income and 48th in education. We rank 19th in unemployment; the problem is that we also rank 49th with the highest percentage of minimum wage jobs. What have our “conservative” Republicans and our governor done about this mess in the last couple of years?

Investing in Idaho's heath care system

As a physician, I care deeply about the health of our communities and providing high-quality care to Idahoans. As the COVID-19 (also known as coronavirus) outbreak shows us, it is imperative that Idaho has a strong health care system. Medicaid expansion came to Idaho just in time. Medicaid expansion has provided health coverage to over 67,000 Idahoans. These Idahoans are now able to see a doctor, get tested for coronavirus without financial hardship and get treatment if they are sick. With access to preventative care because of Medicaid expansion, all Idahoans can help slow the spread of COVID-19.

Ten inches can mean a mountain of bureaucracy

As Planning and Zoning commissioners in Coeur d’Alene we see many unique challenges that have a huge impact on life on our roads, waterways and even schools. So when our commission followed the letter of the law and insisted an entire garage roof needed to be torn down for being a mere 10 inches higher than the 18 foot (216 inches) code for a PORTION of the roof, I question what we are doing.

The conversion of a climate-change skeptic

Call me a converted skeptic. Three years ago I identified problems in previous climate studies that, in my mind, threw doubt on the very existence of global warming. Last year, following an intensive research effort involving a dozen scientists, I concluded that global warming was real and that the prior estimates of the rate of warming were correct. I'm now going a step further: Humans are almost entirely the cause.

VIRUS: Goal is containment

Ralph from Coeur d’Alene writes that he will NOT wear a mask and implies that the science is being manipulated to support the position of people who wish to take away our freedoms — or something to that affect.

TRIO: Just what Hayden Lake needs

We are writing this letter in support of Chris Beck for mayor, Tommy Frey and Ed Graves for City Council in the upcoming Hayden Lake city election. We all know that in this world today, it is imperative that governments balance expenses with income and that getting the most value from tax dollars is more important than ever. Beck, Frey and Graves all have longtime successful business backgrounds and their knowledge and experience will be most important in directing the future of our community.
