OPINION: Just like everyone else, Idaho’s Attorney General must comply with the law
Three years ago, I joined five other former Idaho Attorneys General in describing that important position as “the …
AMERICA: Our society's breakdown
The older I get, the more distance I realize exists between my instilled mores and those of present day generations. Society's desirable honor codes and values, once learned and emulated on two fronts, seem forgott…
NAVY: No more lawyers than ships
I do love the American Navy. The Navy Times reports that by 2015 the budget will cause major a JAG shortfall by 2015. It turns out with one lawyer to 263 sailors the Navy JAG is the lowest attorney ratio in the arm…
PLATES: Replacement is a waste of money
I needed to renew the license plates on our two vehicles recently and was told by the DMV that my license plates, since they were now seven years old, were up for replacement.
RESPONSE: Letter was a long rant
Regarding Mike Marten's letter in the Sunday column. It was a long rant, to be sure. Opinion letters usually lose their reader after about two paragraphs. That's why most columns advise brevity.
WAGES: How did we get to this point?
So far I have read two letters asking federal workers to cut their salary, benefits etc. to help the budget. But I haven't heard anyone complain about the six figure wages, free medical and huge lifetime pensions o…
COMIC: Please find a replacement
I read the comics every day, along with my 11-year-old son. We both did not care for "Alley Oop," and I was glad to see it replaced. However, the new comic in its place is not very good. I would personally prefer "…
TEACHERS: Need to consider factors
Now that the legislation to "reform" education in Idaho is nearly finalized, one must wonder how this will influence the potential teacher pool. Current and future teachers will need to consider many factors when c…
PRIMARY: Top to candidates should advance
Districts 3 and 5 in North Idaho are solidly Republican. In fact, most races find the Republican candidate unopposed in November. I would like to see at least two candidates on the General Election ballot.
STRIFE: There is a real solution
There is considerable turmoil here and abroad. In just a matter of weeks, dramatic change has begun in Middle Eastern countries known for extreme ideologies and inflamed passions. There are no assurances that the n…
GUNS: Bad guys shoot first
In the Press article of March 23 concerning guns on campus, Andrew Arulanandam, an NRA representative, is quoted as saying, "the only thing that stops a bad person with a gun is a good person with a gun." Not so fa…
LIDS: Citizens are pushing back
Commissioner Jimmie Dorsey and the other two commissioners that were elected to represent the citizens of their Kootenai County district are still trying to shove their LIDs down our throats. I would think that aft…
GUNS: Campus plan fires blanks
At first glance, one wonders what idiot would encourage firearms on college campuses. But a closer look seems to eliminate any doubt: our boys in Boise are the idiots.
McEUEN: Simply put, a bad idea
I am a simple man. I do not claim to be an expert in city planning or urban development. I have, however, extensively traveled the globe over the past 40 or so years, and I know what I like.
REFORM: Speak with your vote
It is time to vote senators and representatives out of office who do not listen to their constituents. I vote as an Independent and my children and grandchildren attend Idaho public schools.
KIDS: Not their fault they're hungry
In response to the "Good ole boys, again" letter of March 18, there were many comments in this letter that I take issue with. However one in particular prompted me to respond to the writer.
