ONLINE: A fine education
I was getting bullied at my brick-and-mortar school to the point where I was losing focus in my classes. I enrolled in online school to reclaim the freedom the bullies were trying to take away from me. Little did I know that the new environment would bring so many opportunities. On my first day at Idaho Virtual Academy, I was the shyest kid in my class. This year, I graduated as class valedictorian.

THANKS: Veteran salutes Lloyd's
So many good people in Coeur d’Alene, young and old, have shook my hand and thanked me for my service in Germany during World War II. Buried deeper in the list of local high schools and their SAT scores was the SAT score for Coeur d’Alene High School.

Ah, the June 23 letters to the editor. Jerry Martin vilifying Joe Lykins for his opinions. Why is it some of these far-right Trump lovers feel the need to tear down their neighbors? Jerry claims it is because of two different incidents, one concerning Hillary Clinton in 2016 and the other Barack Obama in 2008. And Jerry is an avowed “Trump Deplorable.” That kind of says it all.

There was an article in a local print publication recently that referenced Museum of North Idaho, stating that in 1948, Idaho had 1,000 school districts voted to consolidate into 115 public school districts! Remedying low libido
In the early 1980s when I first was in practice, complaints of low sex drive, or low libido, were infrequent. Each decade of practice has shown a significant increase of complaints. Initially, it was rare to hear a man complaining of low or no sex drive, normally it was women. But today it is common for males as well — nearly as common as that of women. As in all health complaints, we must ask why. We must do our due diligence in uncovering the underlying reason, or reasons, why this is happening.

Outdoors: American bison making a comeback
Often (and incorrectly) referred to as the buffalo, our national mammal, the American bison (Bison bison) roamed a great expanse of land following the retreat of the glaciers that covered the American continent during the Ice Age. This area was called the Great Bison Belt, and it extended from Alaska to the Gulf of Mexico, from California to just shy of the Atlantic Ocean. It was a wide-open grassland where as many as 60 million bison roamed in massive herds, their only real threat coming from pack-hunting wolves and native Americans, who did little to threaten their numbers.

- The Coeur d’Alene Police Department is still investigating last Monday’s bomb scare near the Kootenai County Courthouse. Investigators are looking at additional evidence to discover who planted a suspicious device in the parking lot near the Hitching Post, less than one block from the courthouse. The discovery of the item — which was designed to appear like an explosive but was not dangerous — prompted police to block traffic that afternoon from the intersection of Government Way and Northwest Boulevard, as well as divert traffic on First Street between Wallace and Garden.

Don't take scammers on vacation with you
Summer is officially upon us and we hope that everyone is getting out to enjoy their favorite pastimes, whether that’s just getting into the great outdoors or traveling to that ultimate vacation destination. Some of us use timeshares and vacation rentals to go to exotic locations we may not normally visit. However, scammers love to take advantage of vacationers by making false promises and creating a sense of urgency to fool them into paying for something that doesn’t exist.
Midwest Floods And World Droughts
After a dry and warm spell across North Idaho, rain and cooler temperatures returned to the region late last week. As of the weekend, Cliff has measured about an inch-and-a-third of rain for the month of June. The average precipitation for this month is 1.93 inches. As we’ve been saying for weeks, we still think our summer season will be dry, but not as dry as the previous two summer seasons in North Idaho and the rest of the Pacific Northwest.

REIKI: The work of Satan
Hard to believe how the Bible and Christianity have been turned around. The Coeur Voice article June 15th about “healing energy” was so misleading, because healing only comes from God, the One and only God. Reiki should not replace prayer and time to spend with God. Satan with a tiny “s” is working overtime because he wants to fool as many people as he can and take them to Hell for Eternity. So people open your Bible and see what He has for you. This probably won’t get in the paper and that’s OK; I’ll continue to pray and love all because that’s what God tells us to do.

Outdoors: CONSERVATION SUCCESS STORIES: White-tailed deer
If you see a deer crossing the road or walking across your yard, chances are it’s a white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus). These animals weigh anywhere from 110 to 300 pounds, and when threatened, they flash the white underside of their tail, hence their name. They aren’t very picky about their habitat, but can usually be found in the open woodlands and mixed forests of southern Canada, the United States and down into Bolivia in Central America.

Don't ignore good advice
With a new influx of college graduates hitting the job market, I thought it would be a good time to share some advice. I started working when I was just 12 years old, with my first newspaper route, and believe me, these lessons apply to jobs and disciplines across the spectrum.
IDAHO: Change isn't for better
I moved from Ohio in 1983 searching for a better life. I have enjoyed a good but simple life in North Idaho. I have always been able to make ends meet and have worked up to three jobs to feed my family. Sadly, I feel Kootenai County is changing drastically in the name of money.
Prairie falls to 2-2 at Church tournament
LEWISTON — Brock Zeller scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fourth inning to tie the game at 1-1 for Prairie, but a two-run double in the sixth inning was the difference as Mercedes Benz College Prep from the Seattle area beat the Cardinals 3-1 in the Dwight Church Memorial tournament at Harris Field on Saturday.
FIRE: Consider consolidation
Wednesday’s editorial entitled “Fire officials must answer burning questions” provided two questions to be answered; are fire officials asking too much and is a super majority really needed for approval? The article further listed average cost per call for various jurisdictions which are fairly consistent although Kootenai County Fire & Rescue was somewhat higher than the others.
This can't be what court had in mind
The Idaho Supreme Court’s recent ruling on police and misdemeanor crimes carries potentially deadly consequences.
Tugboats helped build Cd'A
One spring a decade ago, when the St. Joe River was frozen hard as an aluminum plate, John Condon loosed a couple tugboats from their moorings in Coeur d’Alene and his skippers made the long trip south pushing a few knots through the cold air.
AVISTA: Fishing for a hike
I just read in Wednesday’s Press that Avista has filed a formal request for a rate increase on us for infrastructure. I wonder how much of this will go to Andy Dux and his fish killing biologists of the Idaho Department of Fish and Game. Maybe an increase would not be necessary if they (Avista) cut out the IDFG.
DRIVER: A little compassion, please
Yes it was annoying to have to go a different route or completely around the crash site at Kathleen and U.S. 95 when D. Closs wrapped his truck around the signal post. Some people probably thought, “Serves him right” when the Coeur d’Alene Press announced that he would have to pay the Idaho Transportation Department back nearly a half million dollars even after his insurance paid for the rest. But let’s look at this from a different angle for a moment.
RIVERSTONE: Capitalism in action
Wow, just read Lynn Fleming’s opinion on Riverstone and the upcoming Atlas development. Take a look at Riverstone today. Riverstone looked just like Atlas 12-15 years ago.

Thank you Michael Anderson for your June 8 “My Turn” article. What they did for you was far more important than they may have understood.

SPEECH: Signs of the times
Some interesting contrasts occurred to me during last week’s significant anniversaries:
The real culprits
We have written several times recently about some “fads” in the wine industry, as wine consumers try to consume the most natural wine possible. Some of these trends as we have said are solutions without a problem. The quest for vegan wine or dry farmed wines are simply that, a solution looking for a problem. There is much manipulation of wine though. Things done in the winemaking process that not only adulterate the wine, but also make them worse for you, especially if you have allergies to the additives or processes.

ARTICLE: Not news, but opinion
Coeur d’Alene Press, Saturday, June 8, Page A3; “World/Nation;” This page, seemed to me, is intended to be a brief summary of news, which entails facts and actual events that have occurred. News is not opinion! Opinions are just that, opinions.
Alzheimer's: An epidemic not to be forgotten
In my opinion, Alzheimer’s disease is arguably the most pressing age-related health concern of our time. According to Stanford Health Care, its prevalence is increasing, with early-onset forms of the disease appearing as early as age 30, and one in three adults over 85 having the disease. Stanford Health Care describes Alzheimer’s as a degenerative disease of the brain that causes degradation of nearly all brain functions, including memory, movement, language, judgment, behavior and abstract thinking over time. Extensive research has been conducted concerning the mechanisms of this degradation, but there is still little consensus as to what sets these mechanisms in motion, and many of the medications being used to treat Alzheimer’s have shown minimal impact in slowing its progression. Regardless, it should be noted that we actually know quite a lot about how to make lifestyle choices that can preemptively keep many of these mechanisms within ideal parameters to reduce the overall risk of Alzheimer’s.

OPINION: God and hate speech

Bucket list adventure is close to home
Several years ago Bert and I decided we needed to do an annual adventure and made a list of things we hadn’t done but wanted to do. So far we’ve checked off jet boating in Hell’s Canyon, whale watching in the San Juan Islands, riding the Route of the Hiawatha, white water rafting on the Clark Fork River and taking a plane ride over the Grand Canyon. Floating the North Fork of the Coeur d’Alene River is an ongoing summer favorite for us.

Magic wand solutions to complex problems
Pointy-headed scientists make life in these United States way too complicated. They always want to study a problem to death and, once they have reached a consensus on how to fix it, they want to spend tons of money on a cure. Conservation success stories: The trumpeter swan
Who doesn’t love swans? They are such graceful animals that fly long distances to their breeding grounds year after year. The trumpeter swan (Cygnus buccinator) is no exception. It is the largest species of waterfowl in North America, weighing between 15 and 30 pounds and flying upon a wingspan of 6 to 8 feet. In adults, their plumage is all white; baby swans, called cygnets, are light gray in color. These swans are very popular among birders … and hunters, which is the reason for their temporary downfall.

ROADS: Plea for prevention
I sure wish local government highway and county and city roads maintenance crews did a better job crack sealing, patching and slurry sealing local asphalt roadways. I’ve only noticed limited road projects doing such work. I know doing preventative maintenance is a lot easier and cheaper than replacing or capping roadways. Water gets under pavement, then in cold months it freezes and thaws, causing the asphalt to come loose, creating potholes.

Photobiomodulation: The new frontier of brain science
Photobiomodulation (PBM) is the use of red or near-infrared light, more specifically low-level laser therapy (LLLT) or cold lasers, to stimulate, heal, regenerate and protect tissue that has either been injured or is degenerating. The main organ of the human body that is the most necessary for life is the brain. Unfortunately, the brain suffers from a multitude of different disorders that can be separated into groupings: traumatic events (stroke and traumatic brain injury), psychiatric disorders (depression, anxiety, PTSD) and degenerative disorders (dementia, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s). There are studies showing the benefit of using LLLT in all of the different disorders. There is even the possibility that PBM could be used for cognitive enhancement in normal healthy people.
