Watson doesn’t make cut for USA men’s U19 final roster

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Incoming Gonzaga men’s basketball freshman Anton Watson, a Coeur d’Alene native who on Tuesday was named a finalist (top-18) for the USA Men’s Under-19 World Cup roster, did not make the cut when the final 12-man roster was announced Thursday.

Jalen Suggs of Minneapolis, who is being recruited by Gonzaga, was selected. Another Zag recruit, Walker Kessler, like Watson did not make the cut to the final 12.

The team departs for Greece on Monday for the 2019 FIBA U19 World Cup, scheduled for June 29-July 7.

Bayley cards 29 en route

to first-round 65 in

Mackenzie Tour event

LETHBRIDGE, Alberta — Derek Bayley of Rathdrum carded six birdies en route to a 6-under-par 29 on the back nine in the first round of the Mackenzie Tour (PGA Tour Canada) Lethbridge Paradise Canyon Open on Thursday.

Bayley, who starred at Lakeland High and Washington State, finished with a 6-under 65, three shots back of the leader at Paradise Canyon Golf Resort.
