PRESS: Editorial missed mark
I so look forward to my morning papers on Sundays, Wednesdays and Fridays to read the editorial and letters to the editor. I do not always agree with the editorials but it is usually due to the fact that my opinion simply differs from the writers.
However, I feel the need to respond to the editorial of May 26 titled “Don’t forget The Moment tomorrow.” I anticipated a story of when Memorial Day was started or maybe some stories of valor and bravery of heroes that died for our freedom or reminders that our military are still fighting and dying for our freedoms in many parts of the world. And if a reminder of the difference between Memorial Day and Veterans Day was in order, so be it. Two entirely different days honoring those that gave the ultimate sacrifice and those still serving or retired from the military.
Instead, I read of businesses that the writer felt were “turning a profit on patriotic fervor.” The editorial goes on to state that Memorial Day sales are to be expected due to the beginning of summer and an extra day to shop, etc. And then comes a cheap shot at businesses that in your opinion claim to be more patriotic than their competitors because they are offering a free service or a special for veterans. I see many businesses in town that on different occasions offer specials to veterans and I think “good for them.” I never once felt they were branding themselves as more patriotic then their competitor.
I read with interest Joe Hendrickson’s response letter to your editorial on May 29. And I agree with his assessment of the editorial.
You can do better than this.
