ASSESSED: Racing toward Prop 13
The good people of Treeport are not the only ones with a bone to pick with an assessment office. I feel the Kootenai County assessor’s office has overstepped their bounds and are going to start driving elderly and fixed-income residents out of their homes.
Selling a home I had for about five years with taxes going up a small percentage each year, I was shocked when the property taxes on my new home were raised to what I had paid for it. This year they jumped again to what my neighbor paid for his home. I am on a fixed income and budgeted for taxes to be more stable than mine have been to date.
When this very thing happened in California, it led to Prop 13 to make sure property taxes are applied fairly and evenly to everyone. There is a blueprint for how get relief.
