Unfurl the sails of thought
It came as quite a shock to our Press editor. In a college class of journalism students whom he recently addressed, only two said they read something - anything other than blog or Facebook posts - regularly. Novels? Fat chance. If that's the meager case among young adults who aspire to make a living from words, what hope remains for the rest?
Get tough on crime, not on gun owners
I have read all the letters people have sent in making known their opinions about guns in America. Some of those letters have some merit, and some don't make any sense at all. I've listened to a lot of politicians talking about what they think should be done, but none of the letters and certainly none of the politicians have really come up with any real solutions to the problem.
Reflections on an empty inaugural address
The following thoughts were prompted by remarks made by the President in his Inaugural address. His statements have given pause both for optimism and concern. My concern is that many people of liberal thought blindly embraced all the issues he presented as being good for America. We do not take time to examine thoroughly all sides of an issue. Our educational institutions put more emphasis on what to think rather than how to think. This is true of both secular institutions and many religious colleges and seminaries. The result is a high percentage of graduates are brainwashed. They turn out to be rubber stamped clones of what to think and believe by their favorite professors and institutions. They haven't learned how to come to reasonable conclusions on issues regarding philosophy, psychology, theology, and politics. Too many educators do not emphasize the importance of challenging their students how to think by the gaining of information through the free exchange of ideas for the purpose of discovering TRUTH. When we learn how to think: knowledge, wisdom, and common sense combined with experience will help us come to right conclusions.

POLITICS: Can't we all play nice?
My best friend is a Republican. You may consider this unusual due to the fact I’m a Democrat. Other differences she and I possess: she dresses stylish, while I on the other hand prefer the simplistic look; she doesn’t enjoy a cup of coffee, something I relish, but she can’t say no if offered a cup of Chai Tea. She and I don’t discuss politics because we respect each other’s right to differ.

ADHD drugs perform better than assumed
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) affects an average 9 percent of U.S. children between ages 5 and 17, making it one of the most common childhood disorders. Because children affected by ADHD experience problems staying focused, hyperactivity, and disruptive/aggressive behavior, they are likely to fall behind at school and display risky behavior as teenagers. While such drugs as methylphenidate (Ritalin) may help children with ADHD concentrate better and control impulsivity, some argue that the prescription stimulants transform children into "robots" or "drug them into acquiescence." However, the latest research on the matter reveals that the ADHD children themselves do not agree. Many say that they still are the same people but they "just act a little better."

Alternative treatment for Lupus
Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (aka: Lupus or SLE), is an autoimmune disease that effects the body as a whole. It is a connective tissue/inflammatory disorder that can harm multiple systems such as the joints, muscles, digestion, heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, skin, blood vessels, and nervous system. It is a condition of hyper-reactivity to something by the immune system and is typically treated by conventional medical doctors by suppressing immune function. This may cause it to go into "remission," where symptoms are not so pervasive, however, it does not address why the immune system is responding that way.

INITIATIVE: Keep it intact for Idaho
Idaho’s legislative maneuver (SB 1108) to increase the degree of difficulty in qualifying a citizen initiative runs counter to principles of democracy and fairness. The Idaho Farm Bureau, which seeks to require a minimum signature threshold in a majority of state legislative districts, simply wants to make the initiative process unusable, and to dominate the discussion of its issues at the state capitol.
PRESS: Clarify cardboard caper
Bales, bales, where are the bales? The article in Section C of Wednesday’s paper had me wondering if we had thieves stealing from thieves. The article was titled, “Cardboard bales stolen again.” Were previously stolen bales stolen again from the original thieves? Wow! The economy is bad but I guess I didn’t realize just how bad.
AGENDA: Beware march of liberals
Liberals continue to distort the facts. The only proposed plan to change Social Security was to modify the formulas and raise the early and full retirement ages for people under the age of 55. If that isn’t done, SS will not be unable to continue as it is now because retirees are living longer and the money doesn’t add up.
COLUMN: Partisan but no Pulitzer
I see my favorite Democrat is still exercising his single digit IQ on the readers of this paper. The article Jimmy Pappas wrote in the opinion column of the Feb. 20 copy roamed from watching movies to the 2nd Amendment and ill-conceived comments that were not researched i.e., 100 round magazines for AR-15s. Then he launched into his favorite subject; bashing Republicans.
TAX: Don't hurt property owners
The current debate over the elimination of the personal property tax (which I have paid for the past 20 years) has avoided discussing one element, maybe purposely. I read an article about Ground Force paying in the neighborhood of $15,000 a year and that it would be nice if it would be repealed. How many customers do you think they have in Idaho, if any? The profits they collect through the sale of their products are derived from outside this state.
PRESS: Clearly identify opinion
The Coeur d’Alene Press routinely provides opportunities for Kootenai County residents to write opinion pieces on a wide variety of topics. That is a basic tenet of community journalism, and should be applauded. They are, normally, identified as opinion pieces, another basic tenet of journalism.
GIFT: Good deed sets hearts aflame
My niece and neighbor walked up to trading company recently to buy valentine candy for their class. They barely had enough money so the gentleman behind them in line paid for them. The girls say he was a firefighter and we would like to say thank you so much. He didn’t have to do such a good deed but didn’t even blink an eye to cover their bill. Thank you whoever you are.

Customer or Client, know your rights
You already know there are listing agents and selling agents in real estate. Listing agents focus their attention on adding inventory, usually posting their properties in the Multiple Listing Service, exposing the property to all other members. A selling agent is the one who actually brings the offer to purchase. Often, these are called buyers agents. The distinction is so relevant that the state of Idaho requires that an informative brochure detailing "Agency Law" is presented to all parties of a real estate transaction, "at the first substantial business contact."

REFORM: Voters should feel insulted
Attention Idaho voters: Your legislators think you are stupid. After you overwhelmingly voted down the Luna Laws in the last election, they did not take your “no” as a “no.” They assumed you poor simpletons misunderstood, so they are now repackaging most of those rejected laws—omitting Luna’s name whenever possible—in hopes that your miniscule minds might get it right this time. At the very least they are confident that with some rewording you won’t recognize what you’ve seen before. They believe that by removing their poorly planned measure on technology you won’t spot the other poor plans they are re-offering, and you can also expect them to try the tricks of the D.C. politicians they supposedly despise, like attaching bills you don’t want to those you do.
RACISM: Shadow still looms here
Having moved here some years ago from the Midwest, my wife and I immediately feel in love with the lifestyle and beautiful surroundings. We were proud to say we were from Hayden, Idaho, and told many of our friends back east what a wonderful place this is.
DEER: Live and leave them alone
One writer recently asserted that the deer around here are a complete nuisance. I’ll be nice and not mention the name.
DEER: Invasion is recent phenomenon
Feb. 13: I feel obligated to comment on the news item on the front page of The Press on Feb. 12 concerning the wanton killing and wasting of three deer in Dalton Gardens, and in turn make a couple of comments.
CUTS: They're not for everybody
A cut, cut here and a cut, cut there and a cut, cut everywhere — EXCEPT cuts in the salaries, benefits and travel expenses of the members of Congress and the state legislators. Wonder why?
DOGS: Little effort goes a long way
Responsible dog owners, take note.
SCHOOLS: A sterling example
What if Idaho would fund all public schools so they would be like the Boise Catholic schools (Statesman 2/1/13)? Mr. Luna and the legislature have reduced education funding thus overcrowding classrooms, overloading, demoralizing and emasculating teachers, forcing them to compete against each other for monetary reward and to teach to tests, making them work in run-down buildings with minimal equipment. Does this negligence matter?

We firmly support passage of the levy and encourage community participation in voting YES. That said, the amount of the levy is still too low since it does not fully fund even the current needs of the District.

I read that liquor privatization won't be an issue in what remains of this year's legislative session in Boise. POSTAL: Keep Saturday delivery
The announcement to end Saturday delivery of mail by August 5 is an unnecessary and negative procedure in order to save money. Trading 17 percent for service for 2 percent in savings does not make much business sense. No taxpayer dollars are used. This loss in service would disproportionately affect the elderly, rural communities and small businesses.

What makes wine country wine country
Recently we traveled over to the west side of Washington State to see some winemakers. We also did some wine tasting and picked up some bottles as well. Those we visited had tasting rooms in Woodinville, and there was even one full-blown winery facility in a residential neighborhood in Marysville. While it was great to spend time with old friends and new ones, it left us wondering about all the intangible things that make wine country wine country.

DEER: The meat of the matter
We live very close to where the current poached deer have been found, and though I don’t agree at all with the fact they’re being left for dead, I completely support whoever is getting rid of these deer as they’re a complete nuisance around here just like the wolves are in other areas. We have had several years worth of meetings with Dalton City Hall about how something needs to be done about this epidemic, and they offer no solutions and not much more than an attitude of “quit your whining, we think they’re cute.” They destroy almost everything my parents and neighbors plant for livelihood. I’ve hit one and have to spend about $100 I don’t have to replace my headlight. They are as prevalent around here as rats in NYC and they need to be stopped as they just keep breeding.
This Democrat says guns aren't the problem
Are guns the problem? No, they are not. I love guns. The thought of an armed police officer coming to my door to collect my guns does not sit well with me. Last night, my wife and I watched an old 1950s movie classic with Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr called "An Affair to Remember." It was almost as refreshing and soul cleansing as going to Church. No vulgarity, nudity, or violence. When they finally kissed, they walked up the steps on the Cruise Ship where you could only see their legs, but not them kissing. Those were the Golden Days of Class, respect, and strict morals.

So I asked her, “Can the majority of the kids in your class read and write cursive?” Her response, “yeah?!” (Complete with that preteen look of “duh, that’s a silly question.”)
RACISM: Lighten up on dark remark
In his Feb. 6 letter to The Press, Steve Bell goes out of his way to depict himself as the Robin Hood for all ethnic groups and slayer of the Regans when in reality his letter presents libelous drivel.
BILL: A question without an answer
I called the city of Cd’A to review my monthly water bill. First of all, the new drainage fee helps pay for the downtown project. It will be on the bill for. . . ? No one seems to know.
COLLEGE: Find more ways to pay
As a senior at Post Falls high school I believe there should be more options for helping students pay for college. Scholarships and loans are a huge part of kids being able to get into a school. Some kids don’t even qualify for loans. How do people expect kids to get into a school if they can’t pay? I think there needs to be more options before applying and different ways to pay for college tuition.
TV: Experience not a tasty dish
We recently moved from one Hayden residence to another Hayden residence. We were advised by The Dish Network that they would move us free. We made the move and to our surprise the technician from Dish could not get a signal at our new location. Since we could not get a signal from The Dish Network we decided to use another provider.
TRUSTEE: Here's the bottom line
I am a third generation Coeur d’Alene native and, proudly, a fourth generation educator. My mother, Betty McLain, was a longtime servant of Coeur d’Alene, first as a district teacher, followed by a long career at North Idaho College and, in retirement, a member of multiple community boards, including the NIC board for years.
RIP: Thank you to Annie
I was saddened to hear of Robin Ann “Annie” Davis’s passing. She was ornery and full of life and love for the dogs, especially her Basenjis. She was a county 4-H dog leader back when I started my leader training in the early ‘90s, and taught my sons Jason and Markie, and my daughter Sarah to Fit and Show. I went on to start many show dogs under her, and helped her a number of years to teach Show, Handling, and Obedience classes. Many others in our area have either gotten their show careers or those of their dogs started under Annie.
TAXES: Make up your mind, Idaho
It seems the only requirement to be elected in Idaho is to be a mathematically challenged Republican. I speak of the push to get rid of the corporate personal property tax, which would blow a $141 million hole in local county budgets. This money would go right to education and local services, but it seems corporations deserve a free ride while the average citizens pick up that tab in the form of “local option” sales taxes, increased school levies, and higher property taxes.
A North Idaho challenge
I'm going to say this once: If you or the area you're living in is not known for something, then you shouldn't be allowed to set a world record at/in such.

Wrong time for 2030 Cd'A Vision survey
I have listened to three presentations by Steven Ames and I have little disagreement with the end result of visioning that he is marketing. However, I am not clear what it was that he was really selling. It was a polished marketing presentation with Bend, Ore., seemingly the focus. He painted a picture of a community where mutual trust, respect and openness bring members to the same table to share their thoughts openly with an expectation of making a difference. Clearly, that does not describe where I live. I would love to live in such a place. In fact, I would enthusiastically support reasonable and responsible efforts to achieve it.

Why Europe matters
Recent press by both large and small news organizations has talked about the influx of and dropping prices on European wines. Driven by shrinking wine consumption in the "old world" and increased competition from around the globe, we are seeing producers in France, Italy and Spain increasingly target the U.S. market, and doing so with compelling pricing. We get asked from time to time: "Why does Europe matter?" The sub text of that question is understandable. We have great domestic producers including some right here in our own "neighborhood." So why do we even care about the wines from overseas?
We all grieve in our own way
It has been four months since my father's death and in this past quarter-year I've been offered innumerable, well intended suggestions for how to grieve. I smile, accept the suggestions as positive intentions and go about my life knowing I will grieve on my own terms. Everyone grieves differently.

I keep hearing that Idaho MUST accept the health care exchange (Obamacare) because it’s “the law.” Well, sometimes the law just doesn’t make sense and those of us who see it for what it is need to stand up and call it what it is. Is a law that has 30,000 pages of rules in the making and STILL being expanded as we speak, that REQUIRES American citizens to let the government tell them what is best for their health, that comes between a patient and their doctor, that turns all of a patient’s healthcare records over to the IRS (seems like that HIPAA form I’ve signed at the doctor’s office said something about that not happening)…is this really a law that we can seriously say must be adopted?

DISRUPT: Here's the way it was
Back in my day, if you disrupted a class, you were snatched by the scruff, towed into the hall where everyone in the school heard the whack of the paddle. There were very few disruptions. Can’t do that now. The kids as young as 1st grade know this and dare the teachers to touch them. Hitting, kicking, yes, spitting are just some of the things our teachers must endure while caring for the little darlings. My dad would have given me another whack when I got home if I had caused a problem at school. Today’s parents aren’t doing any justice to their kids with this lack of respect.

Physical therapy to treat sciatica
Sciatica is caused when the muscles in the hip place pressure on the sciatic nerve, which can cause excruciating pain. The sciatic nerve is a major nerve the travels the full length of the body, following the lumbar region of the back and down the leg all the way to the foot. Typically this nerve does not trouble people, but it is vulnerable to pressure due to its path though the hip. In many cases physical therapy will result in effective and long-lasting pain relief.

Hacking away at pneumonia
Angiotensin-converting-enzyme (ACE) inhibitor drugs prescribed to treat hypertension are known to produce a dry, hacking cough as a side effect in some cases, which leads many to switch to another medication. As it turns out, however, this drug-induced, persistent cough may provide a benefit that may have some patients thinking twice about switching to other medications that lower blood pressure. According to an analysis of 37 studies, researchers found that patients taking ACE inhibitors were 34 percent less likely to develop pneumonia, which is a significant cause of hospitalization and death among seniors who typically take ACE inhibitors. Older patients who take ACE inhibitors should consult with their physicians before deciding to switch to an alternative.

EXCHANGE: One size doesn't fit all
It is critical for Idaho to support Governor Otter’s recommendation to create a state-based health insurance exchange. The new law gives us no choice. We will have an exchange, either federal or state-based. Idahoans can design a state-based exchange to fit Idaho’s unique needs, or endure a federal exchange that will be “one- size-fits-all.” As a physician, I communicate with insurance companies to make sure my patients get care. Under a federal exchange, anytime my patient is denied payment for a medication, X-ray or lab test, my only option will be to call a federal “1-800 number” and talk to a stranger (if I get to talk to a human at all).

What are your numbers?
No, I don't mean your phone number or your age either. I mean, your health care numbers, which are the markers of how healthy you really are. These are the numbers you should know every year when you get your yearly physical. Don't tell me you don't have one of those either. All of us, regardless of our age, should know our health numbers. They help us keep track of and assess how we are doing toward our health care goals each year.

According to a 2009 Washington Post article, there are 435 congressmen and 100 senators in Washington, D.C., yet there are over 34,000 lobbyists. As most of these lobbyists are paid well over 6 figures to peddle influence with huge bankrolls, there is a huge tolkein-ish temptation for elected representatives to forget their constituencies whilst immersed in a sea of money, sex and power. Interest rates for 30-year, fixed-rate conforming mortgages rose from 3.67 percent to 3.73 percent during the week according to the Mortgage Bankers Association. The average rate for 30 year loans backed by the Federal Housing Administration rose from 3.48 percent to 3.53 percent Mortgage applications rose too, up 3.4 percent last week. It seems that buyers are seeing the light; that waiting to make a purchase means paying more in the long run for homes.

The current legislature has created a climate so hostile to education, if they were to institute a teacher of the month program, the recipient’s face would appear on a wanted poster. The voters went to the polls last November to soundly defeat the so-called education reform bills, Props 1, 2, and 3. Rather than be respectful of the democratic process by which these measures were repealed, legislators immediately began grousing about the outcome and vowing to continue their fight to make these bills law. The people have said no. They have rejected this set of ideas.

REMARK: Is there an agenda here?
When a person makes a lousy joke, that’s a momentary lapse in judgment. When that person’s momentary lapse in judgment is featured on the front page of a newspaper, that’s a well thought out agenda!
VETS: Heads up to their spouses
I recently lost my retired vet who was 100 percent disabled. Upon filling out the paperwork at the VA Outreach, they informed me it could take up to 9 months to see benefits and the same possibly with SS. I then asked how a spouse is supposed to pay the bills and he shook his head.
REMARKS: Yes, they're offensive
I am writing this letter regarding the Press article on the legislative forum held in Post Falls. I found the remarks of Rep. Frank Henderson and CDA School Board Member Brent Regan offensive and totally lacking in respect for the President of the United States.
REMARK: Stop playing race card
I have been reading with interest the letters in your paper for some time now and have wanted to send something in but have hesitated for 2 reasons. (1) Most of the stuff is so ridiculous, absurd and brainless it is not worth dignifying. (2) I figured it would not be printed anyway.
WALK: And **** all the dog ****
I can’t count the number of times I’ve thought about writing on this particular subject. As I walk my dog daily, guess what I encounter everywhere, no matter where I walk? You guessed it, dog ****. You dog owners who do not carry bags and refuse to take the 10 seconds it takes to pick up after your dog are Morons, with a capital M. Do you consider that people, including children, walk on these pathways and in the parks? They play and accidentally step in YOUR dog’s **** and take it, on their shoes, into their cars and home to their carpets.
COMIC: This one gets failing grade
The Funnies Page last Saturday included the “comic strip” F minus. It was not funny by any stretch of imagination. Apparently some comic strip writers, much like many stand up comedians, cannot think of anything humorous unless it involves a bodily elimination function. I think that you could find another strip that actually makes a person laugh when they read it.
EMERGENCY: But help is all around
I was enjoying an evening at a local restaurant on Feb. 1, and a woman beside me fell sick suddenly. Within five minutes she began to lose consciousness. One man jumped up and assisted by calling 911. Another man immediately moved in to assist and a doctor did not hesitate a second, delegating to have her moved to the floor to treat her while his wife ran to bring him his stethoscope from the car.
GLADYS: A great friend to students
In my presentation to Gladys Schneidmiller at the Post Falls Banquet for the Heritage Award I inadvertently left out perhaps the most important thing that Gladys has done for a long time for this community and I sincerely apologize for this oversight.
HISTORY: Column much appreciated
I just wish to express my appreciation for the History Corner column that is published in the Sunday edition of the Shoshone News Press.
POEM: Summit is the solution
Idaho’s annual Youth Summit presented by Idaho Drug Free Youth (IDFY) is our response to Samantha’s poem entitled “Keep Going,” that was published in Friday’s Cd’A Press. Yes!
GUNS: Ban any weapon you want
Am I missing something? I don’t understand why we as a nation aren’t having the most obvious argument about gun control. Instead, all I see in the news is either a person with a picket sign claiming it’s their right or the NRA saying we should have guns in schools. Who knows what politicians will do or say next?
PROBLEMS: Don't blame our officials
Kudos to Mr. Begovich for correctly identifying the source of man’s problems, but he had no right to take public officials to task for not acknowledging that source publicly. While the source is indeed spiritual and is immune to any solution which is not itself Spiritual, we have to recognize that framers of the constitution forbid government officials from the establishment of one religion over another in order to insure and protect individual choice. In reality, that means that folks are constitutionally free to publicly worship satan if they so choose. And many do choose, but not publicly — not yet. Jesus said in Lk. 11:23 that: “He that is not with Me is against Me...” No middle ground here.

This whole “racist remark” debacle is a sad example of what is going wrong in our country. Are we really going to sacrifice a decent, hard working, caring man for doing nothing more than pointing out the obvious? That makes absolutely no sense.

Sunless Gloom: Seasonal Affective Disorder, Part I
Seasonal Affective Disorder, aka: "S.A.D," (not to be confused with, but related to, the Standard American Diet, which also uses the acronym "S.A.D."), is the term given to the feelings of gloominess, depression, sadness and melancholy when the sun doesn't shine enough. It's very typical for this time of year, winter, when a ceiling of clouds greets us when we arise in the morning and continues throughout the day, for days on end.
Ramen Noodle make over
Ah, Ramen Noodles. These little bags or cups of dried noodles with soup-flavored powders are cheap and easy to prepare, making them a favorite must-have for most college students. Ramen is an ideal food for the dorm room because you just add hot water and have an instant meal in three minutes. Around 94 billion servings of Ramen Noodles are consumed, worldwide, every year. Unfortunately, these little packages contain around 400 calories, 14 grams of fat (mostly the bad kind) and very little fiber. The average American should consume around 2,300-2,400mg of salt a day. Ramen clocks in at a whopping 1000 per serving, or 2000 per package. Even though there are two servings per package or cup, most people eat the whole package. There is not a lot of nutritional bang for your buck.
87 percent
Made it, 27 out of 31 days in the month of January with 60 minutes of exercise. Not an "A," but remember perfection is not the goal. Increasing our time frames for exercise and making a commitment toward our health is the goal for the year. And 87 percent is a good start. So how is your start for the New Year going? What is your goal for your kids and family? You need a plan.

Can dental implants benefit you?
Chances are that either you or someone you know has a dental implant. That is to be expected because implants are, more and more frequently, becoming the treatment of choice for a variety of dental issues. There are two main reasons that people undergo dental implant therapy: to replace single teeth, and to increase denture stability. These two treatments have, over the years, not only changed how we practice dentistry, but have also brought about an equally profound change in the lives of patients around the world.

Grief for my father
The phone rings at 1:23 in the morning and I am lost in sleep. Realizing the ring is not in my dream I sit straight up in bed and attempt to rejoin reality. Heart pounding, I reach for the phone and quickly say, "Hello!" On the other end of the line is my mother. Searching for air my mom speaks in broken sentences. "Your dad. In the hospital. He's not breathing." My fuzzy mind searches for words. "OK, OK," is all I can offer.

LETTER: Good enough to retype
I would like to compliment Mr. Roger Argo, of Dalton Gardens, for his letter to the editor Jan. 23. Mr. Argo’s letter had two redeeming features: 1. It was short, and 2. It was an original thought. Even though his logic — to compare automobiles to assault weapons was a bit moronic — he should get an “attaboy” for attempting satire.
REGAN: Call for an investigation
Thanks to your trustee Regan, racism is once again, alive and well in Cd’A, Idaho. In front of 100 people and legislators he made a comment about gun control and said that people could not figure out what an assault weapon was, and “its black and looks scary.” To which his wife replied, “Well, so is Obama”

ABORTION: A squandered asset
Since 1973 about 50 million abortions have taken place. In just 40 years, roughly 50 million people don’t exist. To put this in terms of the economy, there are taxpayers who are not paying their fair share of the tax burden or contributing to social services, people who could have been doctors, engineers, scientists, teachers, people who would have helped to fill in the shortages upcoming with Obamacare. Therefore we are paying for abortion twice, whether privately or with government funds, and through the loss of uncollected taxes.

Interest rates rise again
Those who have been thinking of buying real estate take note. Last week marked the third consecutive week of rate increases for mortgage loans. As investors exchange their investments in bonds to invest in the recovering stock market, interest rates are rising. Some say this is a trend that is likely to continue as long as the stock market improvement seen this year sustains. Should the market falter however, as some predict, investors are likely to seek the safety offered by mortgage and Treasury bonds which would stabilize rates once again.

REGAN: You have a big job to do
To Brent Regan:
EGAN: No harm, no foul
After reading what Brent Regan’s WIFE said, “President Obama is black and dangerous” we cannot see that there is anything, whatsoever, wrong with the statement. It is true and wasn’t denigrating to the President or Mr. Obama. What is wrong with the truth? Why are you all in such a “tizzy” over something like this, a simple remark not even made by Mr. Regan? You should all pay much more attention to the multitudes of child molesters in our Kootenai County neighborhoods and to the numerous bullies in the classrooms. This is a ridiculous waste of the school board’s time and energy focusing on a non-issue.
REGAN: Remark wasn't racist
I am really getting sick and tired of certain individuals and groups turning almost every negative comment about Obama into something “racist.” If you don‘t agree with what he and his administration are spouting you are obviously a racist, they say. We have been hearing this crap for way too long.
REGAN: Response an over-reaction
Heavens to Betsy, the sky is falling! Someone dared to make a joke that wasn’t approved by the thought and public relations police. Maybe there should be a grand inquisition, why not criminal charges, and certainly an immediate, voluntary resignation from his school trustee position.
MOM: Don't blame the schools
Is Monique Freeman for real? How could you possibly blame the school for what you failed to do at home? If my child was in a classroom with a child that is continually “disruptive” I would insist that the administrators remove and place him somewhere more appropriate (most would probably like to lock him in a closet).
POEM: From a high school student

GUNS: Problem is evil in world
If we really wanted to get serious on gun violence in our society, why wouldn’t we go after the root source of the problem? People are made in the image of God, and are constantly being attacked by evil. Some need help.
CITIZENSHIP: A great privilege
My parents, my sister and I left The Netherlands on Oct. 11, 1949, and arrived in New York City on Oct. 19, 1949. We went to Salt Lake City, Utah as we had a sponsor there. I was 10 years old. After five-plus years my parents and sister became citizens, but I was too old to become one automatically at that time.
