PRESS: Church is an unfair target

| February 20, 2013 8:00 PM

For the past two weeks we have been treated to howls of indignation concerning an ill-advised but innocent comment comparing our President to a potentially banned firearm. That was done because it was politically incorrect to make such statements. Your paper makes no mention of Muslim mistreatment of women, Buddhists, Coptics and a host of other innocents because it is politically incorrect to do so. No mention is made of the ethnicity of the shooters in Chicago, the flash mob thefts in Baltimore or the subway beatings in New York City because it is politically incorrect to do so.

Your Sunday editorial cartoon — if one could call it that — took square aim at the Catholic Church. It carried with it the notion that the leadership of the Church is mired in the past. I will charitably assume that your brand of political correctness exempts the Church from its protection. I will fully acknowledge that the Church is not without fault in some of its conduct but I defy you to name one institution in our fair country, from top to bottom, that is not without equal or more grievous fault.

On balance, the Church does more good for more people than any other institution, including the federal government, that comes to mind. So I ask you, what is to be gained by the cartoonist’s snide sniping? So I ask you, if you won’t insult anyone else, why the Church? Did you have something to say about the Archbishop of Canterbury’s position on homosexuals within his Church or those who have fled from it?

Might it be time to apologize?

P.S. you might look at what century we are in; your cartoonist is behind by over 10 years.
