DISRUPT: Parent was out of line

| February 6, 2013 8:00 PM

Regarding “Disruption leads to eviction:”

A quick review of a few statutes and codes from the State of Idaho will confirm a principal’s response was not only appropriate, but in the best interest of the school children and their education. She was also fulfilling her mandated duty as a principal and educator. Ms. Freeman suggested that the reason was unjustified. The state of Idaho disagrees.

Idaho Code 33-205 Denial of School Attendance (paraphrased):

The principal of any school may temporarily suspend (send home) any pupil for disciplinary reason, for any conduct disruptive to the instructional effectiveness of the school.

Idaho Statutes 33-1222 Freedom from Abuse:

Certificated employees of every school district shall be free from abuse by parents, or other adults, as provided in Section 18-916, Idaho Code. Violation of this statute is a misdemeanor and punishable by law.

At her admission, Ms. Freeman was yelling (abuse) at a highly regarded principal in a public school in front of adults and children. This is the third time her son has been sent home.

A parent is a child’s first teacher. Apparently her son is a capable learner. Mom has taught him well. Unfortunately, being disruptive isn’t a social skill that is valuable.

A parent is there to educate their children on many different levels. Not just our schools. I’m hoping Ms. Freeman seeks the help of professionals who can help her and her son.
