RATHDRUM - While host Lakeland ran away with the 4A Region 1 team title, it was an all too different story to decide the 5A Region 1 and 3A District 1 champions, with both being decided by only a few points during the state-qualifying meets on Saturday.

5A: Defending state champion Lewiston edged Post Falls by 4.5 points to claim the team title, despite crowning only three champions compared to the Trojans' nine.

Post Falls coach Pete Reardon was pleased with his team's 14 berths to state, and believes his wrestlers will enter the tournament even hungrier after the close loss to Lewiston.

"Honestly I felt really good about how we competed and thought we wrestled about as well as we can today," Reardon said. "Hats off to Lewiston. They just had a little more depth than us, but it could end up being a good thing going into the (state) tournament. I think now we will wrestle with a bit of a chip on our shoulders."

Alius De La Rosa (106), Drake Foster (120), Tannar Riekena (132), Stephen Ost (145), Austin Wilson (160), Seth McLeod (170), Cody Johnson (182), Ryan Failor (195), and Justin Farnsworth (220) won championships for the Trojans.

Foster, a sophomore, realizes he has a target on his back after a 2012 state title, but feels if he wrestles his kind of match he will not be beat.

"The No. 1 seed pushes me to go harder," he said. "Going to nationals opened my eyes that I can compete at the top level and that's what I'm going to try and do down at state."

In what was the match of the night, or at least the upset of the night, Post Falls senior Tannar Riekena (132) defeated Lewiston's Bryce Parson on a last-second reversal and 10-8 decision.

Parson was reportedly 45-0 leading up to the regional tournament.

Post Falls' McLeod (170) defeated Coeur d'Alene junior Hudson Staub 5-1 in what could be a preview of the state final.

Coeur d'Alene qualified 13 wrestlers to state with the potential of at-large bids being added today.

4A: Lakeland earned 16 berths to state and crowned nine individual champions, breathing a little easier than its 5A and 3A counterparts on the way to a blowout win for the team title.

"The kids wrestled real well and everyone lived up to their potential today," Hawks coach Rob Edelblute said. "Everyone is another year older and more mature, so we have a shot at winning some hardware with the number were taking down to state."

Tyler Siegford (98), Justin Wright (106), Tyson Hendricks (113), Austin Hoobler (120), Dustin Hannawalt (126), Chad Miller (138), Brandon Yount (145), Jesse Putman (152), Karsen Walker (160), and Killian Estes (170) each claimed regional titles for Lakeland.

Led by the championships of Lewis Dutton (132) and Jon McCormick (182), the Sandpoint Bulldogs will be sending six wrestlers to state after finishing second overall to the Hawks. Tanner McNelley (113), Brent Buchmiller (126), Adam Weindl (170) and Josh Travers (195) will also be making the trip south.

3A: The battle for the 3A team title could not have been tighter between Bonners Ferry and Timberlake, with the Badgers winning by 1.5 points - but the biggest story of the tournament might be that of Bonners Ferry senior Blaine Invernon, who has his sights set on a third state title.

Invernon (138) won titles as a freshman and junior, and can now join Adam Hall as the only Badger to win three state titles.

"I really wanted to be the first four-time state champion, but winning it again this year is something I have been dreaming of," Invernon said. "Last year I just wrestled my heart out, and if I can do that again everything should end up good for me."

Anthony Skeen (152), Quinn Cummings (160), Carman Krichbaum (195), William Gaspar (220), and Morris McAllister (285) also won championships for the Badgers, who will send 12 wrestlers to state.

Timberlake coach Ryan Montang was unhappy with being unable to bring a first district championship to Timberlake, citing injuries and kids unexpectedly dropping out of the tournament as the culprits, but stayed positive about the 11 wrestlers headed for state.

"We might have a sour taste in our mouths right now, but we can redeem ourselves next week," Montang said. "This was our tourney to win and we let it get away from us, but on the positive side all the kids battled and some kids who weren't even seeded ended up making it to state."

Ryan Starr (98), Dailyn Johnson (106), Rocco Wingfield (113) and Kody Hongslo (126) won championships for the Tigers, who send 11 wrestlers to state.

The 5A/4A/3A/2A Idaho state tournaments will be held Friday and Saturday at Holt Arena in Pocatello.
