Just before 7:30 p.m. Sunday, law enforcement responded to a call reporting multiple gunshots had been heard coming from a multi-dwelling residence at the corner of Utah and Brown Streets behind Mountain View Congregational Church.

The Shoshone Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) approved the purchase of a $17,950 man lift by Shoshone County Solid Waste director Richard Brenner. The purchase addressed a serious safety need for the solid waste department and the county’s transfer station.

New exhibit open at Wallace photo museum
The Barnard-Stockbridge Museum is open for the summer season and they’ve added some pretty big pictures. The purpose of these big images is to allow visitors to explore the details and understand the little things that made Wallace what it was and what it is today.
Gender statement leads to graduation ban for Kellogg student
A Kellogg High School senior is being barred from participating in his graduation ceremony after he made comments about genders during a school assembly. “Guys are guys and girls are girls. There is no in-between,” said 18-year-old Travis Lohr during the assembly, which offered graduating seniors the opportunity to impart words of wisdom to the high school’s underclassmen. Lohr was informed afterward that he would not be allowed to walk in Saturday’s graduation ceremony.

Herrick Park property being negotiated
Public access is at the forefront as Shoshone County commissioners address a piece of property at the center of an ongoing dispute over the land’s ownership. The property, at the mouth of Big Creek as it flows into the St. Joe River near Herrick Park, is now the subject of a quiet title suit filed in April by the Buell Brothers against the unknown heirs of William and Joyce Scofield, the original owners of the Herrick Park land.

Probable slaying-suicide under investigation in Wallace
The Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office is investigating what appears to be a slaying-suicide that occurred Wednesday in Wallace. Elizabeth D. Lawley, 33, was found dead in her father’s home, along with her 2-year-old son, also deceased. Both had gunshot wounds.

Nestled high above the Silver Valley floor, one of North Idaho’s most unique attractions is set to open next week. The Route of the Hiawatha is a 15-mile, rails-to-trails experience unlike any other. Volunteers sought to 'get down and dirty' to beautify city
After more than a decade, the Wallace Flower Project Committee has their work down to a near science. What they need now is manpower. “Volunteers are needed to plant more than 2,000 flowers in 200-plus baskets and hayracks that will grace the Second Street corridor, Sixth Street Park, and light posts throughout the residential and business areas of Wallace,” committee member Janet Feiler told the News-Press.

The Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an apparent murder/suicide that occurred on Wednesday evening in Wallace. Elizabeth D. Lawley, 33, was found dead in her father’s home, along with her two-year-old son – both deaths caused by apparent gunshot wounds.

Water district petition moves to new judge
The dysfunctional situation at the Cataldo Water District is now in the hands of a Kootenai County judge. Shoshone County Prosecuting Attorney Ben Allen filed an emergency judicial petition on behalf of the patrons of the CWD following the approved recall petitions and subsequent resignations of all five of the board’s members in December 2022.

The embattled Cataldo Water District board is no more. Last month Shoshone County Clerk Tamie Lewis-Eberhard approved five petitions to recall the water district's five board members - Ed Hanson, Daniel Waldo, Lisa Eaton, Daniel Peterson, and Cathleen House – all of whom resigned their positions effective Dec. 30.
Post Falls man convicted in property damage case
Gilbert Marsan was found guilty Friday of two counts of malicious injury to property following a jury trial in Shoshone County. Marsan, 45, of Post Falls, was charged in April of following a multi-agency investigation surrounding locks that were cut in order to access a gated road. Along with his son Austin, Marsan cut the locks in order to drive a Toyota Tacoma into privately owned timber company lands. Following an internal investigation by both the Molpus Woodlands Group and Stimson Lumber – which included video footage – the Bureau of Land Management's Investigative Division worked with the Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office to identify the individuals from the video.
