Americans call it the Vietnam War. Present-day Vietnamese call it the American War. Whatever it is called, the 407 days I served in that war have had a profound effect on my life ever since.

Dad was born Feb. 25, 1923, in Cornish, Utah, to Milton and Mozell (Pitcher) Boman. He spent his early years in Lewiston, Utah, and was schooled there. He grew up in a large family with five brothers and two sisters. He spent his youth working on the family dairy where everyone pitched in and did their share.

Feel free to send me an email if you haven’t already done so. That being said, a recurring issue I am seeing is reactivity on walks, and I want to cover the first steps to remedy this.

There has been much research about endurance nutrition during racing. However, there has been little suggested for the recovery phase of training. This is one of the most important and least addressed aspects of training in all genre's of competition. Recovery is very important and as noted it often overlooked by athletes and coaches alike. The athletes main focus is on race day for what to eat and drink calculated down to the minute on when to take it during their race. The athlete rarely focus' on the recovery supplements which will allow them to recover more efficiently while repairing the muscle tearing from training and the oxidation effects of energy expenditure. In the past week we have watched in horror and disbelief at the earthquake spawned tsunami and the effect it had on Japan. Then the subsequent damage of explosions to their nuclear power plants. Our hearts have been torn for the Japanese people and their loss only to see them continue in the specter of nuclear radiation leaking from these reactors and a possible nuclear meltdown. As of this writing, the estimates are that the radiation leakage could continue for months.

This will be the last of my garden columns for the year as another growing season has drawn to a close. The weather we had was very similar to a year ago with a long and very wet spring followed by a dry summer with some hot days. Once again we enjoyed a lovely fall as early September to mid October were just about perfect.
