Remembering Vietnam's lessons a half-century later
Americans call it the Vietnam War. Present-day Vietnamese call it the American War. Whatever it is called, the 407 days I served in that war have had a profound effect on my life ever since.

WOLVES: Controversy ruled by emotions
I would like to make a comment about the wolf problem in Idaho. There seems to be a large amount of bad information being tossed around.

It's a great time for growing
We can only hope that June doesn’t fly by as quickly as May did. Now that summer is here, it would be great if time would just slow down a bit.

First of all, I appreciate everyone who reached out for help via my email address, askdogtrainersteph@gmail.com. I am reading all of them carefully and plan to address each concern as we move along. Feel free to send me an email if you haven’t already done so. That being said, a recurring issue I am seeing is reactivity on walks, and I want to cover the first steps to remedy this.
Six key supplements for athletic performance enhancement
There has been much research about endurance nutrition during racing. However, there has been little suggested for the recovery phase of training. This is one of the most important and least addressed aspects of training in all genre's of competition. Recovery is very important and as noted it often overlooked by athletes and coaches alike. The athletes main focus is on race day for what to eat and drink calculated down to the minute on when to take it during their race. The athlete rarely focus' on the recovery supplements which will allow them to recover more efficiently while repairing the muscle tearing from training and the oxidation effects of energy expenditure. These key supplements have been shown to aid and speed recovery time for endurance athletes: D-Ribose, Co-enzyme Q10, broad spectrum antioxidants, beta alanine, Creatine and HMB.
The skinny on weight loss
Nuclear disaster radiation protection, weight loss
In the past week we have watched in horror and disbelief at the earthquake spawned tsunami and the effect it had on Japan. Then the subsequent damage of explosions to their nuclear power plants. Our hearts have been torn for the Japanese people and their loss only to see them continue in the specter of nuclear radiation leaking from these reactors and a possible nuclear meltdown. As of this writing, the estimates are that the radiation leakage could continue for months.
Wine gadgets that work!
In addition to generating new and different wines from ever evolving regions and varietals, the wine industry is also quite good at generating new “gadgets.” From glassware to pourers and bottle openers to chillers, there always seems to be a new idea out there, and like most things in life, some of the new “inventions” are good, while others — not so much. Here are some of the new wine accoutrements that we have found to be useful and that really work.

It's almost time to hibernate
My Garden Path
This will be the last of my garden columns for the year as another growing season has drawn to a close. The weather we had was very similar to a year ago with a long and very wet spring followed by a dry summer with some hot days. Once again we enjoyed a lovely fall as early September to mid October were just about perfect.
May flowers came early this year
My Garden Path
May is flying by. Every time we walk out the door, we see jobs everywhere that are waiting to be done. Sitting in the shade is going to have to wait a while, I'm afraid.
