PRESS: A Chinese weapon

It appears that the Coeur d’Alene Press, led by Dwayne Hagadone, has become an extended arm of Communist China’s propaganda machine by publishing Andrea Nagel’s column on the front page (not on the opinion page). Ms. Nagel propagates teaching our children about the Chinese virus (COVID-19). She propagates teaching distrust in their own government (don’t watch President Trump’s daily briefings) and instills in children the fear of being labeled a racist through the avoidance of being labeled xenophobic which she accuses our government of being. These are all poor civics lessons for our impressionable youth.

Now I have heard that the Russians are going to give weapons to the government of Syria. What next?

Our children will suffer as a result of Superintendent Tom Luna's plan, ironically titled Students Come First. As parents of children who attend Betty Kiefer Elementary, we were mortified by learning the direct impact within the Lakeland School District as a result of this plan. Furthermore, after researching the plan, we were even more disheartened with the wordsmithing used by Superintendent Luna. It is as if he felt that he could trick us into believing that this would benefit our children. Never have we heard of a governor or superintendent of public instruction propose that increases in class size would improve student performance or in any way put students first.

GUNS: Radical element at work

Radical Islamists have managed to infiltrate one of the most conservative legislatures in the country - Idaho! This revelation appeared to me as I pondered the effects of the bill that denies the colleges and universities in Idaho from banning guns on campuses. Idahoans, think about this. It seems so innocent!

SECURITY: It's actually IOUs

I sincerely hope there is not an adult person living in the United States who is so naïve or uninformed as to believe that there are actually billions of dollars in the Social Security fund.

President Obama recently underscored community colleges as critical to our future economic success. It seems that all facets of our society are at a crossroads during this time of extreme challenge. Our local community college is not exempt. We have an opportunity to elect a highly qualified individual to serve on the North Idaho College Board of Trustees.

LAKELAND: Writer in error

I would like to write a brief rebuttal to refute the claims of letter writer Jerry Larson about Lakeland School District. Larson claimed Lakeland promised laptops for in-coming ninth-graders in its last three levies. This assertion is false. The letter writer is confusing the failed Students Come First Initiative from the state with our district goals.

ELECTION: It's about 'us'

We live in an “It’s all about me culture!” Unfortunately, too many voters view the upcoming presidential election in the context of “It’s all about me” and which party or candidate will give me the most freebies, or which candidate do I like or dislike the most. Too bad our self-absorbed culture can’t see beyond the candidates and look at what effect the next president will have on our nation.

AMADOR: Fiscally prudent

With the massive federal debt burdening our future generations, we should be proud to live in a state that often exhibits fiscal restraint and has a balanced budget. We have an obligation to vote for candidates that will ensure Idaho lives within its means. Paul Amador, Republican candidate for Idaho House Seat 4B is the one candidate that I believe will ensure Idaho remains fiscally responsible.

CRISIS: Center for humanity

Kootenai County is in the midst of an expensive humanitarian disaster, but help is on the way. Currently, those who are in mental health crisis are being warehoused in our jails at taxpayer expense. This practice is more expensive than providing proper treatment, provides terrible outcomes for society by criminalizing vulnerable people and introducing them to a criminal social network, and above all, it is manifestly inhumane. But, when law enforcement is called because someone is acting outside the norms of our society, there is no other option for protection of the public. Until now.
