Light shed on shooting at long last

Several months ago we had a tragic shooting and a story about it by Cd'A staffer David Cole appeared in The Press, which prompted me to write a letter to The Press expressing disappointment that Mr. Cole had intentionally slanted the story to make our community question local law enforcement's commitment to protecting us.

Tempest brews over Fernan Lake

Mr. Miller's response to the My Turn piece I wrote requires some clarification. Apparently a public airing is what is required to elicit a response from the Fernan Lake Conservation and Recreation Association (FLCRA). It is important that the public be better informed of efforts of all groups/individuals who endeavor to keep our environment clean.

Physician recruitment: Slow but steady growth

In a recent issue of The Press, JoAnn Lokken pointed out a critical problem we face in Idaho; a severe deficit in physicians. This is also a national problem that is challenging in North Idaho. Nationally, the Association of American Medical College is predicting a nationwide shortage of nearly 122,000 physicians by 2032. Locally, Idaho currently ranks 49th in the nation for the number of physicians per capita. Our local situation is further exacerbated by the fact that many of our existing providers are retiring and competition to recruit newly graduated physicians is coming from all over the United States.

Uphold the Constitution, no matter your religion

Several years ago, when my son was still in high school, he wrote a letter to the editor of this fine paper. It was in regard to our country’s label of “Christian Nation” and the importance of maintaining that title. I don’t remember if it was a high school assignment, or exactly what it was that impressed him to write the letter. Perhaps it was just after President Obama’s statement that America is no longer a Christian nation. I simply remember his chosen topic and the many valid points he made to support his belief. And I loved that he cared enough to write it.

Idaho voters can help stop Russian interference in U.S. elections

Idaho voters are uniquely positioned to influence Congressional passage of a bill to stop Russia from trying to corrupt our elections. The bipartisan Defending Elections from Threats by Establishing Redlines (DETER) Act would impose serious economic sanctions against Russia for election interference. The sanctions would be substantially stronger than those presently in place.

Mind body connection

You might not realize this, but our emotional and physical health are connected. Whatever the emotion is, our bodies respond physically to our thoughts and how we feel and act. Positive emotions such as gratitude have been scientifically linked to a number of beneficial health effects. Stress and negative emotions can cause havoc.

MY TURN: Idaho GOP caucus ignores voices of men and women fighting for freedom

As a retired Navy Chief Warrant Officer who dedicated over two decades of my life to serving in the military, I find myself deeply troubled by recent developments in Idaho's political landscape. Idaho's transition from a primary election to a Presidential caucus system, purportedly to encourage voter participation, is not only causing confusion but is also disenfranchising an important portion of our electorate — our men and women in uniform, currently deployed and sacrificing for our nation.

Vandals extend Eck through 2028 football season

"We are very pleased with the progress our program has made in our first two years," Eck said. "We are not content. Our sights are set on bringing a championship to Moscow. My family and I love the University of Idaho and this community. We are grateful to President Scott Green and Terry Gawlik for this contract extension to remain here."

Can we tax our way into happiness?

Most Americans see an oxymoron when the words "tax" and "happiness" appear in the same line, but that apparently isn't true of those northern countries that gave the world the Vikings and pickled herring. In a recent worldwide survey to determine the happiest people on the planet, Denmark and its Scandinavian neighbors dominated the top spots, which is a curious phenomenon considering those countries also have the world's highest taxes.

TREATY: More than meets the eye

I read with interest in the Sunday, Dec. 9 edition of the Coeur d’Alene Press, Kenneth Green’s opinion regarding the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). It’s curious to me Mr. Green chose to quote Sarah Palin in his topic sentence, as Governor Palin’s comments were minimal in regard to this U.N. treaty even though she has a special needs child. Neither was Palin’s “wusses” comment Green referred to (for which she later apologized) directed at Republicans in regard to the U.N. CRPD. This comment rather was in regard to the fiscal cliff debate.

Here's change we can all believe in

When Senator Evan Bayh (D-Ind.) announced on Feb. 14 his resignation from the United States Senate it created shock-waves throughout the American political world. Why did he resign; was there a problem? Senator Bayh thought so: too much partisanship, too much politicking, and nothing getting done. And I believe the senator's comments and expressions put it mildly. One Web site reporting on the resignation stated: "Senator Evan Bayh, Indiana delivered the truth to Americans that our political system in Washington, D.C., is 'dysfunctional,' riddled with 'brain-dead partisanship' and permanent campaigning. Bayh put it bluntly, 'the system is broken.'" When it comes to American politics, we've come a long way, baby, and it ain't all good.
