On Nov. 3, at The Coeur d’Alene Resort, we are overjoyed to once again host this inspiring event. This year, we are welcoming guest speaker Amberley Snyder, who will share her story of triumph in the midst of incredible tragedy.

OPINION: Open primaries will foster a stronger, truer Republican Party

Idaho's Republican Party is at a crossroads. The closed primary system we implemented in 2011 has distorted Idaho’s political landscape, forcing voters to join the GOP simply to have a voice in elections. This system has diluted the essence of our party and fueled special interest groups that thrive on low voter turnout and divisive tactics.

Lady Beetle

Lady Beetle

I was homeschooled through much of my childhood. During one such session (math, I think?) in autumn, my sister, mom, and I looked up at our ceiling to find hundreds — literally hundreds — of tiny red and black-spotted “aliens” invading our house through an almost invisible space between the edge of a window and the ceiling. Our house was under siege from insects commonly known as ladybugs! They were looking for a safe, warm place to hibernate over the long, cold winter, and our house apparently fit the bill. We were well into the winter vacuuming up the remnants of our autumn invasion. Scientific results are inconclusive as of yet, but I suspect our insect invasion may be part of the reason my mother hates the red and black-spotted insects now.

Times to beat

There is no way to get around it. The cardiovascular component of exercise is what we need to do everyday, 30 minutes a day, no matter what. It is the aerobic part of our program. It takes time to do it, because you need to keep your heart rate above a certain level for the entire 30 minutes. Many of my patients say to me that they walk back and forth to their car everyday from work, or they walk the kids to school or take the stairs instead of the elevator and think this is enough cardiovascular exercise. These are all good things, but they are not enough. They are not an aerobic exercise that benefits your heart and lungs as we need to everyday. They burn some calories, but they do not have the time frame and rate of exertion at a consistent level that is necessary.

Here's snow in your eye

If you're like me, you've been by Cherry Hill Park or the Coeur d'Alene public golf course back when we actually had snow on the ground, and you saw the multitudes sledding down the hills there. And if you're also like me, you did a little of that growing up.

Learn the joys of hand spinning your own yarn

Age old craft can soothe the soul, calm your nerves

The art of hand spinning yarn has been around for thousands of years and recently has made a resurgence among fiber arts enthusiasts who yearn to take their knitting projects back to the very source they originated from. Hand spinning is the art of twisting fiber, fleece, or roving of wool, silk, alpaca, angora, mohair, etc. into a continuous thread by using a spinning wheel or drop spindle. Both methods let you transform your raw fiber into a spun yarn you can then craft into a unique knitting or crochet project.

Time to get voters involved

Thank you Scott Reed for the education on what can't be done, and The Press for suggesting that we should all just give up because our "representatives" are better equipped to make up our minds for us. There is an old saying that states "two heads are better than one." I'd submit that was the premise behind which our constitution was framed. To interpret otherwise would suggest that our forefathers over 200 years ago had an inkling of two income families and urban sprawl.

Turning the page on the calendar

This year with the way the holidays fell, we even managed a three-day weekend, which was wonderful. We had the time to host a dinner party of our own, catch up on things that needed attention at home after an intense few weeks, and in general relax and regroup. Also, we had a bit more time to spend on preparing and enjoying our evening meals, and a chance to linger over a glass or two of wine and really appreciate what we were having.

A body burdened

We all carry mental and emotional burdens. But what about body burdens? The term “Body Burden” or “Toxic Burden” refers to a condition in which the body houses an accumulation of toxins from environmental and other exposures. These physiological burdens steal our energy, inhibit our ability to lose weight, interfere with proper healing and immune function, contribute to cancer, autoimmune and other degenerative diseases, and just plain disrupts your health.

Both political parties wrong about 'civil rights'

"Civil rights," a philosophical phrase that sounds so simple; yet, it proves to be elusive and divisive. There will always be some real and some perceived inequities.
