Bullets flying over our rural property

Citizens, take back your country

Strategic steps need be taken to win back our democracy. At present, our elected officials, from local to national, are elected, and very often do not represent the best interests of the people. Political longevity and financial gain are often preeminent in their efforts. Therefore, far greater scrutiny of their efforts and results needs to be instituted. The following concept - Tuesday Night - would refocus politicians' efforts on their constituents, where it always should have been.

Techno health

As a physical therapist, the technological advances that are occurring in the marketplace for our health fascinate me. So much information is now available to us; with all the information, we should have the power to change our health outcomes, right?

Children's health under scrutiny

The topic of children's health, or the lack of it, is increasingly being scrutinized. The increased incidence of "adult diseases" affecting our children today is chilling. Obesity, diabetes, cancer, asthma and even heart disease are increasing in our children at alarming rates. Why is this happening, and is there anything we can do about it?

Less suffering would lead to a safer world

The recent terrorist attacks in Paris have rightly stirred the Western world. The response to this violence fails to address long-term resolution. The terrorists have had the hoped-for effect of promoting fear. In our emotional response to this tragic event, we further the agenda of the terrorists. By barring the door of immigration we ensure that the non-combatant refugees of Syria will be made to further suffer after losing everything in an effort to reach freedom and security for themselves and their families.

When human management isn't such a good thing

What condition would our forests, lakes, rivers, deserts and oceans be in today if they were not being "managed" by the human race?

Things to remember in these scary times

I feel very fortunate that my daughter attends Lake City High School and that the staff is so driven to keep our children safe. I understand that there was slight confusion amid the most recent, unintentional fire alarm at school. This raised my concerns a bit.

What the President must do to counter Russian aggression

A gentleman recently asked what kind of action I thought the President should take to punish Vladimir Putin for his hostile acts against the United States. The question was in response to my insistence that our top intelligence officials and Congress speak out and demand presidential action to counter Russian aggression against this country.

Are you at risk?

I always thought the old saying "a picture is worth a thousand words" was true, and now I really think that is the case. Two weeks ago at the Race for the Cure, we had the opportunity to test the antioxidant levels of a lot of our community that stopped by our booth. As you look at our sampling, you can see that the majority of those that we screened were in the 20,000 to 30,000 ranges, which is the orange color. Then came the yellow and the red color. These three colors are associated with low antioxidants levels. The blue and green colors, which are 40,000 and above, are associated with good antioxidants levels that will protect you from disease, such as heart disease, diabetes, depression, cancer prevention and re-occurrence, and auto-immune diseases. Dr. Oz scored 75,000 when he was tested on his show.

The Skinny on Weight Loss: Part I

As attested to by the many ads in the media, we are a nation of dieters. According to the Surgeon General of the United States, "The greatest threat to our country isn't terrorism, it's obesity." Perhaps more of us should be thinking about losing the unhealthy extra weight we've accumulated. But losing weight is physiologically unnatural. Many of you who have tried can attest to that and that's why 95 percent of people who have successfully lost weight will gain it back.

It's past time for a bold initiative for education in Idaho

Governor Little is following in his predecessor’s footsteps by creating yet another task force to study the next steps Idaho should take in education. In the meantime, the legislature too has taken piecemeal steps to restore investments to our schools post “great recession.” Even so, they failed to fully fund the minimum teacher base salary to $40,000 as promised .

Trump's fly-by-the-seat-of-his-pants foreign policy endangers America

The President’s trip to the G-20 meeting in Japan produced some foreign policy blunders that will prove harmful to America’s national security. The problem is that he just wings it without bothering to develop an understanding of complex international issues.

One special way that the Coeur d’Alene Regional Chamber supports local businesses in our region is through our connections with nonprofit organizations. The strongest communities foster nonprofit organizations that serve the vulnerable. These nonprofit partnerships create mutually beneficial relationships with businesses in our local community.
