OPINION: No room for differences on Memorial Day

The last Monday in May has been established by Congress as Memorial Day, the day to remember, honor and mourn the Americans who have died in the country’s wars. We should all put aside our differences on May 27 to thank those who gave their last full measure to protect America’s “government of the people, by the people and for the people” as President Abraham Lincoln described it.

Highway out of the comfort zone

Once upon a time, a king was given two baby eagles as a gift, and he assigned a caretaker to raise and train the magnificent birds. One day, the king asked to see the birds fly. Both birds took off, one soaring in the sky while the other only flew for a few minutes before returning to its special tree.

Duck’s death shocks golf community

Members of Avondale Golf Course frequently enjoy sightings of the local wildlife, from birds to deer to muskrats. But Dale the duck was special. For years, the black cayuga duck was Avondale’s unofficial mascot, beloved by golfers and staff alike. A group of four people allegedly ran Dale over with a golf cart Friday, killing the duck and devastating the Avondale community who loved it.

U.S.: We can rule Oz

The Wizard of Oz is a true American Classic. First published in 1900 and made into a movie in 1939 (shortly before World War II), it has entertained and inspired multiple generations with its story of the search for the brains, heart and courage it takes to defeat evil.

Grind your own grain

Grind your own grain

Most of us have been buying commercially milled flour for as long as we can remember. It's just not something we think about much these days. I'd venture a guess that most school kids have only a foggy idea where the powdery white stuff in the pantry originated (before the supermarket). The real shame of buying flour from the store is that freshly milled flour is rich with flavor and nutrients that get stripped away during large-scale processing. It all started during the Industrial Revolution, when mass food storage and shipping became the rage. To this day, commercial milling removes the "germ" of the grain, which contains healthy and flavorful fatty acids, in order to extend the shelf life of flour. Soon after whole grains are milled, those wondrous oils start to spoil, whereas degerminated flour can technically last for years without going rancid. The secret that many of our grandmothers understood, however, is that storage isn't a concern when you make flour at home, and the payoffs from grinding your own grain are plenty.

TRAPPING: Shades of Arfee slaying

Where are all the Arfee fans when it comes to pets being killed by local trapping? One dog is killed by gunshot and the whole community rages about it for months. Two pet dogs (that we know of) are killed by traps in a much more traumatic and cruel way and nobody seems to care.

PITBULL: Attack was preventable

The other night my neighbor and friend was outside working in his yard when his next-door neighbor walked by with his pitbull on a leash. My friend asked if the dog was friendly. He said yes. As my friend bent down to pet the dog, it attacked him, taking his lip, chin and cheek off. Come to find out that anytime the dog is outside it is required to have a muzzle on.
