COPS: Count your blessings

We are blessed and so fortunate to live in such a beautiful place called North Idaho. I could use more sunshine, but have learned over the years to think of the positive and be thankful.

PAY: Teachers still deserve more

It was nice to see the recent increase in teacher salaries, but it’s still not enough. Based on the responsibilities they shoulder, teachers of our children deserve to be paid twice their current salary. Same goes for the men and women in our military, law enforcement and fire fighters.

The Well Read Moose Bookstore continues to be a wonderful asset to our community. Most recently the owner of the Moose, Melissa DeMotte, helped with our PEO fundraiser (PEO provides scholarships to women continuing their education).

TSA: Regulations have crossed line

In response to David Sheridan’s letter; so Mr. Sheridan thinks anyone who doesn’t want to consent to a ‘scanner’ or an ‘enhanced patdown’ is ‘crazy enough to be a danger to my flight” and should ‘STAY HOME’.  Although  I support having my luggage x-rayed, walking through a metal detector and removing my shoes these latest regulations have crossed the line.  This is what our Forth Amendment states:  ‘The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.”  It is a fact that only persons from the Middle East with direct connections to terrorists groups have brought down or attempted to bring down an American airliner, all  these terrorist had Visa’s, Passports, etc allowing them to enter our country.  So instead of toughening our immigration and REALLY doing something to protect our borders, the average American citizen who flies must endure ‘unreasonable searches’ to make us feel secure.

KTEC is not needed

Could Kootenai County benefit from a facility like KTEC? You bet. Should it be the responsibility of property owners to fund it? Not in my opinion. Most of us paid for our own educations.

ILLEGALS: Letter promotes racism

Teri White’s recent letter to the editor probably did more to promote racial bigotry than Arizona’s recent immigration law. When people trespass our borders as illegal aliens they are breaking the law no matter what their ethnic origin. Terri is listed as a resident of Post Falls and is over 800 miles from the problem and doesn’t have to fund the added burden on schools, hospitals and welfare. It is easy to criticize the Arizona law when you are far from the actual problem.

SCOUTS: Don't forget the boys

This is a subject that is currently eliciting much attention in our area, due primarily to the proposal to dispose of Camp Easton, the long-standing scout camp on the east shore of Lake Coeur d'Alene, in trade for other property. With all the passion that this subject has generated, we are concerned that there is a potential to forget that scouting is a program whose basic purpose is to help boys.

Ready for great month - and a fantastic lineup

One of my favorite book characters, Anne of Green Gables, stated it best. “I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.”

CDA SCHOOL LEVY: Vote yes

A number of years ago, our community members chose to elect me four times to represent them in the Idaho Legislature. My margin of victory rose with each election, and I viewed that as a sign that I had earned their trust and they were happy with the way I was representing them. To the many thousands who voted for me, I remain humbled and grateful for your support. In office I tried to be reasonable, open-minded and fair. In doing so, I was able to earn the respect of members of both parties. So, once again, if you would still trust and support me, I am asking for your vote, this time for a yes vote for the Coeur d’Alene School District levy.

CLIMATE EXTREMISM: A distraction

Biden’s foremost Defense Department’s policy is attacking climate change, not terrorism. Climate extremism takes our focus off from our real problems. I recently watched chunks of ice fall into the ocean from a glacier in Glacier Bay, Alaska, a thrilling experience. I read where glaciers in Glacier Park may disappear within 200 years because of global warming. My response… So what. These melting glaciers would have about as much effect on our planet as adding one drop of water to Lake Coeur d’Alene. Climate is continually changing and to think that mere man can change weather patterns, (start/stop a Category 5 hurricane or even thunder showers) is beyond comprehension.

TRUMP: Our turn now

To the people who voted for Hillary and who are having trouble dealing with the prospect of our country embracing capitalism once again, I promise to show you as much empathy/sympathy as you did when half the country had to accept that our country was embracing socialism/communism when Obama was elected twice.
