CARS: Classy lady honored

Last weekend’s Car d’Lane was bigger than many people realize. Most of the spectators who took in the show and shine don’t know that the Father’s Day weekend tradition started over 20 years ago in my parents’ living room. Now I listen to people at the car show talking about how they come to CDA every year with their families to see the cars and tell stories of their own rides and memories.

Confused by Easter date? Join the club

I'm still not used to it. With kids at home and, it seems, remembering my own childhood, I still associate Easter with the spring break. That certainly makes family gatherings easier. Now spring break is gone and we're still waiting for egg hunts.

McEUEN: Define the vote first

As this election season draws to a close (hooray!), I still have concerns on what seems to be a top issue regarding the city of Coeur d'Alene races: McEuen. I've long been troubled with this topic and wrote a Press My Turn column earlier this year detailing such. Since then, neither of these following items have been addressed to any satisfaction so I am revisiting them.

Faith in our neighbors

Because the faith of presidential candidate Mitt Romney is an issue, The Press has devoted many column inches to debate and discussion of his faith, particularly compared to other beliefs. And we're prepared to devote a little more, although readers are increasingly telling us this topic has run its course and it's about time to turn back to issues rather than theological arguments.

Giving thanks

I was thrilled when I recently read that The Coeur d'Alene Press and editor Mike Patrick were looking for stories from readers on all that they were thankful for. After all, it is the time of year when we think of all the great fortune we have in our own lives, and how we can extend help in many forms to those who are less fortunate. The question would be for most readers, "How does that work its way into the weekly wine column?" It seems more than a bit trite to be thankful for a great glass of Pinot Noir with our turkey!

Culture versus technology

It was the winter of 1937-38 and I was attending a small high school in Hailey, Idaho. The student body was very small, and there was seldom any activity from outside our small realm that influenced us in any way, but one day this changed and the topic of the day has stayed with me all these years.

Embracing diversity

Diversity is a hot topic these days, but for most wine consumers it never really has been all that controversial. As regular readers know trying all the different wines we have available in North Idaho is my favorite part of the adventure. From the somewhat predictable and familiar big muscular California Cabernet to the light bodied and subtle French Beaujolais, to the esoteric Carménère and Bonarda of South America, they all have their place in the wine rack. In whites, I can embrace the full butter oak bomb Chardonnays all the way to the steely Gruner Veltliners and everything in-between. Producers from the New World appellations of the US, New Zealand Australia and South America, as well as those from the Old World like France, Italy, Hungary, Spain, and even those from the Middle East will all find their way into the shop.
