CARS: Classy lady honored

| June 20, 2018 1:00 AM

Last weekend’s Car d’Lane was bigger than many people realize. Most of the spectators who took in the show and shine don’t know that the Father’s Day weekend tradition started over 20 years ago in my parents’ living room. Now I listen to people at the car show talking about how they come to CDA every year with their families to see the cars and tell stories of their own rides and memories.

While the weather is always iffy, the event is always great, thanks to many volunteers, including Dave Walker, Terry Cooper, Dennis Lacantor, and others whose faces I remember but hopefully will forgive me for not remembering their names.

This year when rain started to pour out of the sky at the end of the show, the clouds thought better of it and cleared up in time for the presentation of awards. A new award was added this year — the Suzanne Kaderka Award. Named after my mother (and former downtown director) and given to the car picked by my dad, Frank, and our family, the award goes to the car which best represents that classy lady.

The winning car, a cream-colored 1955 MG TF with red interior, was definitely a car that Mom would have proudly cruised around her favorite town. Sadly, she left us last year to cancer, but we hope this award will continue on, like Car d’Lane does for many families.
