Our Gem: Keep your butts out of the water

November is typically the rainiest month of the year in Coeur d’Alene.

FLAGS: ‘Tis the season

In the March 26 edition of the Coeur d’Alene Press was an article stating that our mayor and the Coeur d’Alene Downtown Association made the decision to start flying flags early on Sherman and Lakeside avenues to help boost morale during these uncertain times.

HEROES: Thanking them at Christmas

Living in Hayden for quite a few years we noticed sometimes credit is not given to the true heroes of the area. First and foremost all of our men and women fighting to keep this great country free. We can never thank them enough.

DON'T CALL: Law should be honored

Our household re-registers on the DO NOT CALL REGISTRY every six months, on the home and our cell phones in order to refresh our numbers on the "list." My question to the politicians: Did we miss a small print disclaimer on the Registry that exempt you politicians from calling us two to four times a day? Or, do you ASSUME you are exempt from respecting the wishes of your calling recipients?

TOUR: Bouquet of thanks

The Coeur d’Alene Garden Club thanks the Cd’A Press for their excellent articles and pictures of the July 14 Garden Tour. We also want to thank our gracious sponsors, ticket sellers, and most importantly the community for their support and attendance at the tour. All of the above have made this one of our most outstanding tours — we are eternally grateful.

ADDIS: For state House

I have had the opportunity to know Jim Addis for almost 20 years. In my role as the head of economic development and as I have served with businesses throughout our community, I have been impressed with Jim’s leadership and vision. He is the leader we need to drive our economy forward. He understands the importance of education and how it will help us for generations to come. He will do his homework on issues, and will make responsible decisions. I am excited to see Jim as our new representative.

OFFICER: Praying for safety

How blessed was I, and many others, to see police officer Charles Hatley being discharged from the hospital! And that his injury wasn’t fatal. If you don’t pray for protection for our police officers and our fire fighters, you should make it a priority because they need it! We have no idea what they face every day and they deserve our support. Thanking you all for what you do and pray for His protection.

150TH: Photo is backward

I’m sure I’ll be among a few that notice that on page 3 of the “Kootenai County 150th Anniversary” publication included in Tuesday’s paper, the picture is backward. I noticed because our boat is on the G dock and my wife and I, and our family and friends, spend as much time there as we can.

BARBIERI: Wrong on land issues

Why does Vito Barbieri want Idaho to take over its Federal forests and rivers? Because, as he says, “Idaho is unable to tap its abundant natural resources.” Do you really want your favorite hunting ground, your special fishing spot, our unspoiled natural beauty, to be auctioned off to developers? Do you want our forests cut and exported to Asia? Our land ripped open to extract minerals and poison rivers? Is this the future you want?

THANK YOU: Choir appreciates support

On behalf of the 3Cs Coeur d’Aleers choir I would like to offer a big thank you to the members of our community who came to our free Christmas concerts at Trinity Lutheran church on Fifth Street on Tuesday afternoon, Nov. 29 and Friday evening, Dec. 2.

HAYDEN: Urban renewal worries

As a longtime resident of Hayden, I’m surprised that more people are not concerned about the accountability and transparency of the Urban Renewal District. It seems that our Hayden City Council representative, Sandy White, is right in asking for a contract stating what Urban Renewal plans to do with our tax dollars.

VIRUS: Be a patriot

Our country just recognized Veterans Day to remember the brave men and women that gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

ELECTION: Choose best leaders

Patricia Turner’s opinion piece from July 29, “What your Vote Gets,” was concise and an excellent breakdown of the choices between the two candidates for president.

DELAVAN: Community comes first

Kootenai County voters will face an important decision on their mail-in May 19 primary election ballot with respect to the future of our county’s administration and direction. It is now more important than ever to let your voice be heard. You have an important choice to make in selecting our Kootenai County commissioner, District 2.

HEALTHCARE: In Obama we trust

How refreshing to hear a voice of reason and reality about the Bush tax cuts (to the wealthiest) coming to an end. Thank you Chad. The bottom line is we cannot continue entitlements and bailouts while cutting taxes and have a healthy economy.

McHUGH: Most qualified candidate

Everyone in Kootenai County deserves a safe, family-friendly community — a community where our children can enjoy a bright future. I know a man who works tirelessly to make that happen. Let me tell you why we should all band together to vote for Barry McHugh on May 15.

SCHOOLS: Keep access to learning

Living in North Idaho is a privilege. Community members have great access here. Access to adventure, scenery, work and education. It is important to each community member in Kootenai County that this continues at every level — personally and professionally. This is exactly what the Coeur d’Alene School District’s upcoming bond intends to provide to our community children — quality educational access.

RESORT: Crossed line for election

It is one thing to encourage colleagues to exercise their right to vote. The Resort G.M. has a full court press on employees, disguised as a “get out the vote.” It started with a simple memo, then two letters to their homes. Offering advice on candidates who “understand our business,” “very important, particularly to our tourism industry;” “these four are the best most qualified candidates to lead our city and support the continued growth of our industry.” Offers were made as well, to locate and transport employees to polling places!
