DEER: Deal with problem rationally
In response to “Dalton deer drawing danger:” As a 20-year DG resident, I’ve seen the after-effects of predators coming into our community many times, but the prey weren’t usually deer; they were domestic chickens and ducks and wild pheasant, quail or other birds. The predators were most often raccoons, skunks, hawks, owls or an occasional lone coyote.
POISON IVY: Need to know
Thanks for the timely Sholeh Patrick column, “Leaves of three, let’em be.” I am terribly allergic to poison ivy. As a kid, I climbed trees to see baby birds in their nests. Georgia trees were inevitably covered in poison ivy, so I often found myself soaking in diluted vinegar baths and applying a baking soda and vinegar paste. Calamine lotion was ineffective.

SAVED: Little bird, big hearts
Last Thursday, while my wife and I were using the drive-up window at a local bank, we heard some faint chirping. Our attention was drawn to what turned out to be a small bird in the drive-up lane adjacent to ours struggling to walk, but being blown about by the cold, heavy winds we were experiencing. It apparently had been blown out of its nest.

RIP: Thank you to Annie
I was saddened to hear of Robin Ann “Annie” Davis’s passing. She was ornery and full of life and love for the dogs, especially her Basenjis. She was a county 4-H dog leader back when I started my leader training in the early ‘90s, and taught my sons Jason and Markie, and my daughter Sarah to Fit and Show. I went on to start many show dogs under her, and helped her a number of years to teach Show, Handling, and Obedience classes. Many others in our area have either gotten their show careers or those of their dogs started under Annie.

Walk to benefit Alzheimer's
It's like they say; all poodles may be dogs, but all dogs are not poodles. Put simply, dementia is a loss of brain function during aging, with many forms and degrees. It is not synonymous with Alzheimer's disease.
ADVICE: The Commonsense Dog
I deal with hundreds of aggressive dogs each year. Some are easy fixes and some take a tremendous amount of work from the dog, the owners, and me.
