I’d like to encourage our community to vote YES on March 14 in support of our schools. We are being presented with a tremendous opportunity to invest in our schools WITHOUT raising current tax rates, which are already among the lowest in the state.

AVISTA: Against the merger

Avista Sale to Hydro One: I would like to add a thought to the article printed on May 9. Mr. Singleton does not address that when we lose control of our source of power, it will have an effect on our factories and our homes. Cost of goods we buy, as well as the power for our homes will go up. We will not be able to enjoy the freedom to complain as we have today. Our utilities commission will not be able to protect us. As Mr. Singleton points out, we will be under the laws of a foreign country.

They are our schools, provided by us for our children and grandchildren.

On behalf of the staff members of the Lakeland Joint School District, I’d like to say publicly, a heartfelt thank you to the crew members of our local utility companies. We recognize the countless hours you spent away from your families and your own homes, that may have needed your attention, to restore power to our communities. We appreciate the wonderful people in your offices who communicated frequently with us about the restoration schedules for our schools. We understand that many of our families are still without power, but with the majority of our schools open, we can provide a warm place for our students to be and two warm meals for them to eat. This wouldn’t have happened so quickly without the valiant efforts of utility crews. Thank you for all that you have done and continue to do!

LEVY: Reasons for your support

I write this letter in support of the education levy going to the voters this March. This levy that supports the education of our children is an opportunity for the citizens of Coeur d’Alene to show that they believe in the importance of growing our children’s knowledge and providing them with as much opportunity as possible to gain that valuable knowledge. We need to set our children up for success. That success is something that comes with giving our teachers the ability to have more one-on-one time. More one-on-one time is truly dependent on class size. The more we can reduce the size of our classrooms in Coeur d’Alene, the better our children’s education will be.

Independence Day 2020: We have much to celebrate

We are celebrating our nation’s birthday again. This year the good ol’ United States of America is 244 years young. So, happy Independence Day, everyone! It’s certainly a year for the books.

Realtors in the giving spirit, always

Especially this time of year it is impossible to ignore the less fortunate in our community. Our mailboxes are filled with cards and letters soliciting donations for homeless humans and pets, folks with disabilities that run the gamut, people in need of food, shelter, clothing, mental health or drug counseling, etc., etc.

Months ago, we talked about our goals for the New Year at our house with our family, and in our office. One main goal was to make a move to get our health near the top of the list of our priorities every day of the week. This, of course, requires us to make a change in our lifestyles.

After learning about the recent allegations against Jeffrey Kantola, a former LCHS teacher facing charges of lewd conduct with a child under 16, I reached a tipping point. I’m not making a statement on his guilt or innocence, but his record provokes grave concern about our school district’s practice of hiring employees whose backgrounds potentially threaten the safety of our kids.

NIC trustees respond to allegation 'falsehoods'

The NIC Board of Trustees does not routinely respond to articles in the press but we understand our athletic programs are very important to our community, as they are to us. We wish to clarify policy, and dispel recent falsehoods made about the college and our athletic programs. The Board fully supports the investigation into academic integrity violations as well as actions taken to address these violations. Decisions made thus far have been based on the results of the investigation. No other circumstances were involved. Academic integrity is the stalwart of educational institutions. This integrity ensures students obtain college credit for their efforts in their educational pursuits. NIC’s entire focus is educational opportunities for our students in safe learning environments. We have an exceptional accreditation status due largely to our policies and procedures of governance that support the academic success of our students and the high standard of ethics and integrity of our employees.
