We, the People need to save this country

The following are not RNC or Tea Party views. They come from my economics studies, an MBA and 30 years' banking experience. They come from seeing people plan properly, succeed and help others; or neglect to plan - and fail, often blaming others.

CROSSROADS: Counting casualties

One February morning in 2015, we were on our way north on Pleasant View to a chili cook-off with our “award winning chili” in a huge pot secured in the back of our Dodge Magnum (Lil Blue). We were so excited about the event. Looking forward to the responses of our adoring public after tasting our scrumptious creation.

CDA SCHOOL LEVY: Vote yes

Our grandson’s local elementary school recently held a Family Fun Night event. Students and their families filled the school that Friday evening, eating pizza, participating in games and contests, having their faces painted and simply sharing a good time together. In the cafeteria, gym, hallways and classrooms, it was the teachers and parent volunteers who facilitated and played games with more than 750 students and family members. The smiles in the school that night were priceless. It was a timely reminder of how important our schools are in our neighborhood communities as the next generation grows and prepares for a future that will certainly be filled with challenges.

CDA SCHOOL LEVY: Vote yes

Dear fellow baby boomers, Think back to your school days in the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s. Remember the great K-12 public school educations we were given? That was made possible by our parents, grandparents and other adults in our communities through the taxes they paid. This in turn allowed us to get the tools we needed to live our adult lives.

LAKELAND SCHOOL LEVIES: Vote yes

There is one reason to vote yes for Lakeland Schools on May 16. For the future of our youth. We are the parents of four kids who have attended Lakeland schools and we have the honor of working for the school district as well. It has been a pleasure to have a front-row seat to good things happening.

LEVY: Now hear this, strands

“WHAT?!? Another school levy? I don’t even have kids who are in school anymore. Why should I vote ‘yes’ on something that doesn’t affect me??”

Local education matters

It’s been said that “August is like the Sunday of summer," and as this season of fun-in-the-sun makes way for back-to-school shopping, we cannot help but reflect on just how valuable our local schools are to our business community. Many unfortunately separate the two - considering school and business just two proverbial steps in the staircase of life. At the Coeur d’Alene Regional Chamber, we view it differently. We believe that schools and business go hand in hand - that one mutually fuels the other, and does so with a profound generational impact.

A profile of frustration: School critic is off base

Reading Ron Deady’s June 9 letter to the editor in the Coeur d’Alene Press left me completely baffled and bewildered.

MY TURN: Levy supports safe, operational schools

The words reasonable and responsible keep coming to mind as we think about the School Safety and Deferred Maintenance levy on the August 30 ballot. All five of us representing you on the Coeur d’Alene School Board voted to bring this proposed levy forward and ask for your support. This past spring, we trustees toured our 17 school campuses and support buildings and saw firsthand the urgent and emerging security and infrastructure needs.

Your genetics are not your destiny

Genetics have long been discussed in ways that seem to indicate that they determine our fate. Our DNA tends to be thought of as this fixed set of information that is passed down to us from our parents (and it is for the most part). But did you know that our bodies have several mechanisms in play to control how our genes are expressed? The purpose of our DNA is to serve as the code for creating the many proteins necessary for life. According to the National Institute of Health, there are an estimated 20,000-25,000 genes encoding the various proteins that serve to regulate chemical reactions, control the movement of nutrients, create the physical structure of our bodies and perform countless other functions. In much the same way you adjust the volume when you do or don’t like what you hear, epigenetic mechanisms in our cells increase the activity of certain genes when we need more of the corresponding protein, and they turn down the genes corresponding to proteins that are needed less.

THEFT: We miss our sweet Santa

To the Grinch who stole our Santa. To the thief or thieves who stole our lighted Santa from our front porch on Vista Drive. Please return; this Santa is a family keepsake, that has been a joy to our children and grandchildren for almost 40 years. Just return no questions asked.
