PAPPAS: Make it 2 sandwiches

I think Jimmy Pappas was right on the money about The Press setting the rules, guidelines could be more accurate, for the content of letters to the editor. There can be no reason to use language that the “haters” love to use regarding their favorite “topics.” Mike Patrick has kiboshed me as well, though I’m still working the facts on my White Utopia letter, Mike!

Helping cats stand up to pillow foot

A cat’s paw pads serve a variety of essential functions: they help regulate body temperature through sweat glands; provide traction so that cats can grip surfaces while they climb, jump or run; and cushion each beautiful, fluid step a cat makes.

Cookies and milk: Together as a frozen treat

The classic combination of oatmeal cookies and milk. Together at last in a cool summer treat. These ice cream sandwiches start with oatmeal cookies speckled with flecks of chocolate. Nestled between them is purchased vanilla ice cream (for ease) that gets dressed up with bits of toffee.

NORRIS: ‘I’ll trust the sheriff’

Regarding the Oct. 5 My Turn open letter to our sheriff, we are all products of our education, training and experience. Sometimes experiences such as the author describes. I have worked a lifetime in emergency services as a firefighter/paramedic and treated rape patients from under 1 year old to octogenarian, so am not unfamiliar with violence. I am also a grandparent so share concerns about what is available to our kids, regardless of source.

Scoliosis revisited

We had some great feedback on our scoliosis article from September and I'd like to revisit that topic. A question that arose had to do with scoliosis in the older demographic; those who are already past diagnosis stage and living with some range of scoliosis.

Frozen Yogurt vs. Ice Cream: The two heavyweights slug it out!

When it comes to the battle of frozen yogurt vs. ice cream, the clear winner in terms of consumption is ice cream. What isn't clear is why this is the case. Fro-yo, as people who love this tasty treat affectionately call it is clearly the healthier choice of the two. It has health benefits that ice cream doesn't, and doesn't contain anywhere near the level of fat. It also is a lot easier for those who are lactose intolerant to tolerate. This may be why it's been gaining ground in recent years and has become a popular treat for those in the know.

The true meaning of comfort

Food for Thought

Waking up as the sun lightens this cold, gray November morning, I reach for my heavy bathrobe in search of the morning paper. Opening the front door, I feel the chilly morning mist moisten my face - like an unexpected slap from a trusted friend. I separate the advertisements from the articles, brew a pot of coffee, start the fireplace and look out the window wondering if snow will result from the gray. The roasted smell of coffee fills the house as my body begins to warm and I wonder, "Is this the true meaning of comfort?"

Back pain: Bulging discs

When most people think of acupuncture, they think of it as a solution to pain or addictions. While that is certainly accurate, acupuncture effectively treats so many more things than that. Because of the enormous influence acupuncture has on more systemic issues, I frequently forget to talk about the obvious — acupuncture and pain. Today I’d like to cover a specific type of pain — back pain, and more specifically yet, bulging discs.
